Midnight Mania! Domestic Violence Won’t Stop Ostovich: ‘I Want To Take a Stand’

Rachael Ostovich

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Rachael Ostovich opened up about the reason she has opted to continue with her scheduled January 19th bout against Paige VanZant despite recently suffering injury from a brutal domestic violence incident that she reported had her coughing up blood as her husband punched her repeatedly in the face and body. She said she felt like she ‘have to do this’ because the platform gives her an opportunity to stand tall for other victims of domestic violence. Via KHON2.com:

“Although this is a very difficult time for me and my family, I felt that this fight in January was important. I felt that it was extremely important to me to follow through with it, not only for me but first for my daughter, and other people that might be going through similar situations. I want to take a stand against domestic violence, and show others that its okay to come out and speak about it, and not be quiet.

“I’m extremely grateful and blessed for my support system. My family, who has done so much for me and has kept me together and kept me strong. I feel like I am- like I have to do this. This is something that can’t be taken away from me, because I want to use this big, worldwide UFC platform to show people that, don’t let anyone or anything come between you and your career.”

Mr. Berdon, her husband, has pleaded innocent to the charges, downgraded from attempted murder, posted his $ 75,000 dollar bail, and is currently free until his next court date, December 18, 2018. He is under a temporary restraining order that extends to their 5-year-old child.

Ostovich is scheduled to face VanZant at the UFC’s ESPN+ debut January 19th in Brooklyn. Her training is limited currently, but she will transition back to full contact after getting a second opinion on the severity of her injuries.

Her incident is one of several to affect high-profile UFC fighters, including Jessica Rose-Clark and Andrea Lee. MMA, according to an HBO study, suffers from a much higher incidence of domestic violence than the general population, or even the NFL. In fact Dana White recently signed former NFL player Greg Hardy to a development contract after his history with domestic violence ended his football career.

They also are promoting a cross-promotion superfight between Darrion Caldwell and Kyoji Horiguchi that is going to be awesome.

This exhibition bout, of course, is still happening as well, which is going to bring an insane amount of attention to the event.

Showing great knockouts is tried and true, but still a good way to promote fights.

More On That Rachel Ostovich/Domestic Violence Situation

Female fighter Rachel Ostovich was supposed to face Paige VanZant at UFC on ESPN+1 in January, but a few days ago she was the victim of domestic violence and suffered a fractured orbital bone. Now the fight is off, and there’s a whole, big legal kerfluffle going on.

First, a statement from her management team:

Understandably, details are sparse as to what exactly went down. But TMZ Sports has some info about the restraining order Ostovich has gotten against her husband – who just happens to be a pro MMA fighter himself.

UFC fighter Rachael Ostovich has filed for a restraining order against her MMA fighter husband, Arnold Berdon, in the wake of a violent incident over the weekend … TMZ Sports has learned.

Rachael filed for the order herself in Hawaii on Nov. 19 — and based on court docs, it appears the order was temporarily granted and is set to stay in effect until May 18, 2019.

As we previously reported, Ostovich was hospitalized with a broken orbital bone along with other injuries after an incident in Hawaii.

Multiple sources tell us … Ostovich is pointing the finger at Berdon and that’s why she’s filed the restraining order.

Cops have opened a felony domestic violence investigation but have not released the name of the suspect.

We spoke with a family member who is very close with Berdon, who tells us Arnold is seeking a lawyer and intends to defend himself against allegations he attacked his wife.

We’re told Berdon will argue he was attacked first and defended himself.

It sucks that this happened. Not just because a potentially big fight is off, but because a domestic violence is just crappy.

Domestic Violence Rears Its Ugly Head Yet Again, Likely Nixing UFC Fight

Paige VanZant was supposed to face Rachel Ostovich at UFC on ESPN+1 in January, but that fight might not be happening.

As per TMZ Sports, Ostovich had to go to the hospital with a possible broken orbital bone courtesy of some domestic violence.

Sadly, Ostovich isn’t the only female fighter on the UFC roster to have to deal with this crap. Andrea Lee had trouble in August with her man.

Anyway, here’s TMZ Sports:

UFC fighter Rachael Ostovich — who was scheduled to fight Paige VanZant in January — was attacked in Hawaii and sources tell us it was so serious, she’s being hospitalized for major injuries.

Multiple sources tell TMZ Sports … Ostovich was in Honolulu when the incident took place. Our sources tell us she’s believed to have suffered a broken orbital bone.

We’re told Ostovich’s attacker is someone close to her.

If Ostovich did, in fact, suffer a broken bone in her face, it would almost certainly mean her January 19 fight with Paige VanZant at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn would be off.

RIZIN 13 Highlights! All The Laughs, Tears, And Violence

Take a look at all the craziness that went down in Saitama Super Arena as RIZIN makes the case for PRIDE never dying.

Over 25,000 people filled the Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday afternoon for the 13th RIZIN Fighting Federation event, and it was a glorious night of combat that even a typhoon couldn’t put a damper on. Those that tuned in around the world via Fite TV also got enough action to keep them riveted, no matter how late / early it was.

Headlined by Kyoji Horiguchi’s valiant attempt to kickbox with stand up star Tenshin, the RIZIN card also featured highlights from Daron Cruickshank, Haruo Ochii, and Mirko Crocop, along with an entertainingly bad bout involving Bob Sapp. In the middle of all the craziness and pageantry, the event took an emotional turn as RIZIN honored Japanese legend Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto with a moment of silence. His sister also fought and won a fight against Andy Nguyen, just 12 days removed from Kid’s passing due to cancer.

Since MMA is a visual medium, I think it’s best to let you see all the action from this event. Let’s take a look at all the results, highlights, and finishes!

Tenshin Nasukawa def. Kyoji Horiguchi via unanimous decision

Jiri Prochazka def. Jake Heun via TKO (strikes) at 4:29 of R1

Mikura Asakura def. Karshyga Dautbek via unanimous decision

Daron Cruickshank def. Diego Brandao via KO (flying knee) at 5:18 of R1

Miyuu Yamamoto def. Andy Nguyen via unanimous decision

Mirko Cro Cop def. Roque Martinez via TKO (doctor stoppage) at 4:58 of R1

Bob Sapp def. Kintaro Osunaarashi via unanimous decision

Haruo Ochi def. Mitsuhisa Sunabe via KO (soccer kick) at 2:51 of R3

Kai Asakura def. Topnoi Thanongsakiek via unanimous decision

Ayaka Hamasaki def. Mina Kurobe via submission (kimura) at 4:45 of R1

Taiga Kawabe vs. Kento Haraguchi majority draw [Kickboxing bout]

Nick Diaz’s Domestic Violence Legal Woes Are Over

Erstwhile UFC star Nick Diaz was supposed to be returning to the Octagon, but after dealing with some USADA nonsense, a female acquaintance went nuclear and had him arrested on accusations of domestic violence.

And of course, nothing derails a comeback like ugly domestic violence charges.

But a friend of Diaz chimed in that the charges were crap, and finally, the judge and the presiding district attorney have agreed. Diaz is a free man.

As per MMAFighting:

The Clark County (Nev.) District Attorney declined to pursue the case against Diaz, the popular UFC fighter, on Thursday morning, according to Diaz’s attorney Ross Goodman. The judge in Las Vegas Justice Court dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning it was dismissed permanently.

Diaz was facing three felony charges, including two counts of domestic battery by strangulation and one for domestic battery with substantial bodily harm. In addition, he was facing a domestic battery misdemeanor charge stemming from a May incident.

Last month, a grand jury ruled not to indict Diaz on any of the charges, but the DA decided to move forward with the case until now.

“We are grateful that the District Attorney’s office was fair and thoughtful in reviewing this case based on the evidence and making the decision to dismiss this matter particularly in light of the Grand Jury’s decision finding probable cause was lacking,” Goodman said in a statement.

Apparently the accuser couldn’t keep her story straight. *Sigh*

Diaz took to social media to thank those who stood by him.
