Dominant champs are fun to root for, but the sad reality of it is that those kinds of champs can stymie division growth.
As strawweight champ, Joanna Jedrzejczyk kicked a ton of butt and fed us tons of violence. But things were on the cusp of getting stale. How many times would we have to see her beat down Claudia Gadelha?
Thankfully, Rose Namajunas stepped in and TKO’d Jedrzejczyk something fierce. Now, “Thug Rose” is queen of the 115-pound females, and though they’re scheduled to rematch at UFC 223 in Brooklyn, already people have been pondering the permutations of match-ups available with Namajunas at the top.
One such ponderer is Jessica Andrade, who lost to Jedrzejczyk and must get past Tecia Torres at UFC on FOX 28 this weekend before she can ask for another title shot.
Still, Andrade wouldn’t mind if Namajunas beat the former champ again.
As per MMAJunkie:
“It’s going to be a great fight between the two of them,” Andrade told MMAjunkie. “Because they’re fighting again so quickly, it’s kind of hard to imagine what’s going to happen this time around.
“I’m sure that with a win here, I should be able to get another title shot, but I don’t know what’s going to happen over there. If it’s Rose, great – I’m actually cheering for her. She’s a great representative for the sport and is a great champion. As much as I would like to get a rematch with Joanna, for this fight, I am cheering for Rose.”
