Tukhugov Out, Johnson In Against Artem Lobov At UFC Moncton

Khabib Nurmagomedov made headlines when he declared he’d quit the UFC if they fired his teammate Zubaira Tukhugov for punching Conor McGregor during the UFC 229 brawl. There’s been no announcement regarding Tukhugov’s fate from the UFC or the Nevada State Athletic Commission, but he has been officially taken off the upcoming October 27th UFC Moncton card against McGregor teammate Artem Lobov.

The fight was originally set as a grudge match, as Tukhugov was part of the posse that Khabib surrounded Lobov with leading up to UFC 223 — the incident that led to McGregor jumping on a private jet to New York with 20 teammates and throwing a dolly at a bus. Lobov even went so far as to beg the UFC to keep Tukhugov on the card, saying they shouldn’t let him ‘escape his punishment.’

Now Artem faces an arguably much tougher challenge with Tukhugov’s replacement: Michael Johnson. The match up was announced by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani on Sunday night.

Johnson holds wins over some impressive names like Tony Ferguson, Edson Barboza, and Dustin Poirier. But the TUF veteran has struggled to stay in the win column against the top names in the division, going 2-3 over the past two years with losses to Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje, and Darren Elkins. That last fight against Elkins was in his featherweight debut. In August, Johnson returned and notched his first win at 145 pounds against Andre Fili in a hard fought split decision.

Lobov is on a two fight losing streak with defeats to Cub Swanson and Andre Fili, but hasn’t made it into hte cage since October of 2017. A fight against Alex “Bruce Leeroy” Caceres at UFC 223 was cancelled due to his presence at Conor McGregor’s bus attack, and now his fight with Tukhugov has been switched with weeks to go due to a similar but more serious violation on Tukhugov’s part.

Lobov and Johnson will fight in the co-main of the event headlined by light heavyweight contenders Volkan Oezdemir vs. Anthony Smith.

Zubaira Tukhugov flagged for potential USADA violation, out of UFC event in Albany

Tiago Trator needs a new opponent for his upcoming UFC fight.

The UFC announced on Tuesday that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has notified the promotion of a potential anti-doping violation stemming from two out-of-competition sample collections of Zubaira Tukhugov, who was scheduled to meet the Brazilian on Dec. 9 in Albany, New York.

“The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Zubaira Tukhugov of a potential Anti-Doping violation stemming from out-of-competition sample collections made on September 7, 2016 and October 29, 2016,” the UFC statement read. “USADA has provisionally suspended Tukhugov based on the potential anti-doping violation. The UFC is removing Tukhugov from his scheduled bout against Tiago Trator on December 9 in Albany, New York, and is in the process of attempting to locate a replacement.”

Tukhugov (18-4) hasn’t fought since suffering a split-decision loss to Renato Carneiro in May, having a nine-fight winning streak snapped in Curitiba, Brazil. Prior to that defeat, the 25-year-old featherweight was 3-0 under the UFC banner.

Trator (20-5-1, 1 NC), who now waits for a new opponent on less than a month’s notice, hasn’t competed inside the Octagon since September 2015, when he improved his UFC record to 2-1 with a split-decision victory over Clay Collard at UFC 191.

UFC Fight Night 102 is scheduled for Dec. 9 in Albany’s Times Union Center, and features a heavyweight bout between Derrick Lewis and Shamil Abdurahimov in the main event.

Zubair Tukhugov inspired by Fedor Emelienaneko in UFC debut

JARAGUA DO SUL, Brazil — The list of Russian fighters in the UFC keeps getting new names, and the most recent addition is Zubair Tukhugov.

A 16-3 featherweight from Chechnya, Tukhugov was expected to make his UFC debut against Thiago Tavares at UFC Fight Night 36 in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil, but Tavares suffered an injury less than 10 days before the fight. UFC newcomer Douglas Silva de Andrade took his spot, but Tukhugov was the one who had his hands raised after the bout.

“He surprised me,” Tukhugov told the media after the win, through an interpreter. “He looked ready to fight anyone. He fought really well. It was tough for me when I heard they would have to change my opponent nine days before the fight, but I decided to fight anyways.

“I really liked my performance in the UFC. The UFC is a big promotion, they treat us the fighters really well, and I’m happy to be part of it.”

Tukhugov joins the likes of Khabib Nurmagomedov, Ali Bagautinov, Rustam Khabilov and Omari Akhmedov in the UFC, and he’s confident that more Russians will enter the Octagon soon.

“I believe we’ll see a lot of Russians fighting in the UFC now that they’re interested in going to Russia,” he said. “The UFC has plans to do an event in Russia this year, and I would like to be part of the card.”

With five stoppage victories in his MMA career, the featherweight is inspired by the legendary Russian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko.

“I personally know Fedor and he’s a great fighter, one of the best of all times,” Tukhugov said. “I look up to him, he’s an inspiration because he’s really good.”

“There are a lot of great Russians fighters in the UFC,” he continued. “One of them, Adlan Amagov, already left the UFC because of family issues, but I’m sure that many other Russians will get here in the future. We have a lot of great fighters that deserve to be in the UFC.”
