John Lineker eyes late July return to the UFC after surgery for broken jaw

John Lineker is gearing up for his return to the Octagon.

The bantamweight striker, who fractured his jaw in the first round against T.J. Dillashaw in December, is not cleared to compete just yet, but he’s getting close to the finish line.

“I’m already training well,” Lineker told MMA Fighting. “I can’t get hit in the head yet. I’m using a helmet, but I’m already training well.”

Lineker was on a six-fight winning streak when he faced Dillashaw at UFC 207, and says he will be ready to step back inside the cage by the end of July

The Brazilian is currently ranked at No. 4 in the bantamwe.ight division, and former champion Dominick Cruz, one of the fighters he always wanted to face since moving up from 125 pounds, is the only bantamweight ranked above him who currently doesn’t have a fight booked.

However, “Hands of Stone” expects to face someone else in his return.

“I don’t believe the UFC will give me Dominick Cruz,” Lineker said. “They will definitely give me someone else. I’m not sure who I’ll fight next, but it’s definitely not Dominick Cruz.

“I’m here to fight anyone. I want to go back in there and put on a fight.”

Sage Northcutt’s next UFC fight delayed because of surgery

After battling strep throat on multiple occasions throughout his short Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) career, Sage Northcutt will go under the knife to correct the issue, as “Super” is set to have his tonsils removed next week, which will delay his combat comeback.

Following his loss to Bryan Barbarena at UFC on FOX 18, Northcutt revealed he wasn’t 100 percent going in, declaring that a battle with strep throat hindered him in the days leading up to the bout. It’s a claim that was backed by UFC president Dana White.

And after his most recent case of strep throat while helping Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley prepare for his rematch with Stephen Thompson at UFC 209 last month, Northcutt’s team decided it was best to get his tonsils removed.

“His tonsils were damaged from the first (strep throat illness) and had little pits or holes in them that kept harboring bacteria,” Mark Northcutt — Sage’s dad — told MMA Fighting.

Northcutt (8-2, 3-2 UFC) hoped to return at the stacked UFC 211 pay-per-view (PPV) event on May 13, 2017, in Dallas, Texas — his home state — but his upcoming surgery has derailed those plans. He last competed at UFC on FOX 22 in Dec. 2016, losing to Mickey Gall via second-round submission.

‘Messed up’ Stephen Thompson declares his knee surgery a success

Apparently, posting videos of yourself while still a little loopy after surgery is the new in-thing among mixed martial artists.

Stephen Thompson recently underwent knee surgery in his home state of South Carolina, less than three weeks after his decision loss to welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in the main event of UFC 209.

Thompson, who boasts a professional record of 13-2-1, still wasn’t quite all there on his way back from the hospital, but he took a moment to tell fans that while he was “still messed up on my medicine,” all in all, “today was a good day.”
