Paige VanZant Gives a Surgery Update and It’s Gnarly

Normally, for any posts about UFC starlet Paige VanZant, I’d make the main photo more relevant to the content of the story. But no, not this time.

You see, VanZant has been nursing a busted wing for a while, and got surgery to fix it. And she posted a post-surgery pic… and damn is it gnarly. So instead of tormenting everyone who goes to the CagedInsider main page with a look at Frankenstein’s forearm, I have posted a pic of the little dancer/fighter in more appetizing times.

Geez, get well soon, Paige, but definitely let that nastiness heal.

Soooooo, do you think there’s gunna be a scar?? #ufc

‘Mayday’ Avoids Hand Surgery Following Bellator 202

Michael McDonald

Bellator 202 “Budd vs Nogueira” took place July 13, 2018 at WinStar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville, Okla. The co-main event featured a vicious knockout by Michael ‘Mayday’ McDonald, after which he was sure that he had broken his hand AGAIN.

Bellator 202 “Budd vs. Nogueira” took place July 13, 2018 at WinStar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville, Oklahoma. The main event saw Julia Budd defend her Featherweight title with a third round TKO against the previously undefeated Talita Nogueira.

The co-main event also featured fireworks as former Bantamweight champion Eduardo Dantas looked to get back on track against former UFC star Michael McDonald. That did not happen though as Dantas got crushed by a right hand, then screwed up his ankle falling down from the blow, leaving himself defenseless for what was officially a knockout at 58 seconds of round one.

McDonald didn’t escape unscathed either and unfortunately that comes as no surprise given “Mayday” vowed to throw lighter punches to not break his right hand again. He didn’t — he broke his left hand instead. In the post-fight interview, he seemed concerned about his future going forward.

“You know man, I broke my left hand, I can feel it, I broke my hand,” he said. “I hit a little too hard for my body frame. I don’t know how long I can do this if I keep breaking my body in every fight.”

Fortunately after a visit to the doctor, McDonald got some better than expected news. The break is confirmed but if there’s such a thing as a “good break” he got it.

In a couple of months McDonald should know if the “no surgery” option worked out, which in theory at least means he could be fighting again before the end of the year.

Weidman Headed For Yet Another Surgery

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion, Chris Weidman, has one of the worst records in all of mixed martial arts (MMA) when it comes to debilitating injuries, rivaling the oft-hurt Dominick Cruz in the “oh shit, not again” category.

His latest setback stems from a hand injury suffered in his submission win over Kelvin Gastelum at UFC on FOX 25 last July (more on that here), one that was expected to be — but wasn’t — corrected by way of surgery.

From his conversation with the Slip ‘N Dip podcast:

“I had a surgery back after my Gastleum fight and I’ve been on the sidelines and I’ve had some great opportunities offered and I couldn’t take them because I was trying to get the hand better. And I pretty much found out that it’s not going to get better. I need to get another surgery. So I am getting another surgery in a week and a half. It could be a two-to-three month recovery and then I should be good to go. It’s been a tough last eight months.”

That puts an “All American” return somewhere in the vicinity of mid-summer.

Fortunately for Weidman, he’s currently ranked No. 4 in the division, which continues to search for its identity after burning through a couple of big names in the past few months. As it stands, Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero will collide for “The Reaper’s” middleweight strap this June in Chicago.

Weidman will be 34 when — and if — he finally returns to action.
