‘Clean’ Jon Jones Releases Statement On UFC 232 Drug Test

It wouldn’t be a Jon Jones fight without some sort of crazy drama. This time that drama materialized in the form of an ‘abnormal’ USADA drug test result, one that found trace metabolites of oral Turinabol in his system. USADA released a statement claiming this came from Jones’ original drug offense in July of 2017, but the Nevada commission refused to sanction Jones’ UFC 232 fight on December 29th against Alexander Gustafsson.

In an interesting turn of events, the UFC has decided to save the fight by switching the location, taking UFC 232 from Vegas to Los Angeles after the California commission tested Jones and agreed to license him. That’s obviously led to a lot of what the holy huh wow reactions from everyone, including Jones’ most famous opponent Daniel Cormier.

The two went back and forth in less than professional fashion, which is a contrast to the official statement Jones just put out:

Oh, and because this is Jon Jones, he couldn’t help but get a parting shot in at Daniel Cormier referencing his six figure challenge…

In this case, the UFC and Dana White seem to be standing behind Jones and agreeing with USADA’s determination that this is tied to his previous suspension. And while it’s nice to see the UFC stand by their man, you still gotta feel for all the sports fans who planned vacations to Las Vegas for UFC 232. Losing a main event is nothing new, but an event switching cities? We hope a 4 hour drive from Vegas to Los Angeles isn’t out of the question for too many of you.

What do you think, Maniacs? Are you happy the UFC did what they had to do to save Jones vs. Gus? Or would you rather they kept the event in Las Vegas?

Brian Ortega Releases Statement On Doctor’s Stoppage At UFC 231

Brian Ortega came into his UFC 231 fight against champ Max Holloway with a lot of hype. How could he not after knocking Frankie Edgar out cold for his sixth straight UFC win? Once you add in Holloway’s weight cut troubles and that disturbing stroke-like incident in July, you can understand why Ortega came into Toronto a slight betting favorite.

Unfortunately for Brian and those who put money on him winning, Holloway showed up in phenomenal shape and put on an absolute striking clinic, hitting Ortega in round 4 with the most significant strikes ever landed in a single UFC round. That left Brian’s face such a mangled mess that the cageside physician wisely called the fight off before the start of round 5.

At the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White declared Ortega ‘too tough for his own good’ and lauded the doctor’s decision. As for Ortega’s thoughts on the stoppage? We never got to ask him because he was taken straight to the hospital. But now “T-City” has released a short Instagram statement on the fight and the way it ended.

”Doctor stopped it and I agree,” Ortega wrote. “Broken nose and a broken thumb. I was willing to die in there. Last night was Max’s night. I’ll be back. Thank you to everyone who’s always believed in me and supported me.”

Ortega’s coach Rener Gracie had his own Instagram message, directed more towards his pupil than the public.

”When we arrived at the hospital, the first thing you said was ‘I’m sorry.’ My brother, you have nothing to be sorry about,” Gracie wrote. “You came from nothing and you competed on the highest level against one of the best p4p fighter’s in the world. For four rounds, you took his best shots, but you never went down and you never stopped firing back. The heart you displayed last night could never be taught, and I’ve never been so proud to be your coach, your friend and your fan. You didn’t fail, Max prevailed. And if it was ever possible to win in defeat, you did it last night. I love you bro.”

With that kind of support, we’re sure Brian Ortega will be back to terrorizing the 145 pound division in no time. And with Dana White pushing hard for Max Holloway to move up to lightweight, there just might be a vacant title to fight over by the end of 2019.

Ngannou Releases Statement: ‘The Predator Is Back!’

Ngannou took to social media to celebrate his UFC Beijing win and the ‘redemption’ that came with it.

After a two fight stumble that saw him mauled in his first title fight by Stipe Miocic and then psyched out in a headscratcher of a decision loss to Derrick Lewis, some had written Francis Ngannou off.

Those people are crazy, of course. Fighters have ups and downs, and it was inevitable that Ngannou’s relative inexperience would cost him some losses at some point. But since that January loss to Miocic, there’s been non-stop quotes from bosses and coaches about Ngannou losing his way. Freezing up against Lewis in July only made things worse.

Ngannou did his best to put that talk to rest in Beijing, China, knocking the equilibrium out of Curtis Blaydes and forcing a stoppage just 45 seconds into their second fight (watch it here).

Now he’s taking to social media to thank those that stood by him during his slump.

“I finally saw the light yesterday night at UFC Beijing by overcoming my darkness which dragged me deep to the bottom,” Ngannou wrote. “My fans, my family and all those people who trust and believe in me have got persecuted by haters and doubters but they didn’t give up and they kept supporting me and that’s where I found strength to overcome all this.”

“I wanna thank every single one of you, who once trusted me and who kept supporting me, who stayed beside me and who didn’t stumble,” he continued. “I’m grateful to have any of you known and unknown by my side and in my life since this is all my life.”

“Thank you China and particularly Beijing for welcoming us and for all the love and energy you guys put in, it was an honor for me to perform for you guys such an amazing people and a great crowd.”

He finished off his letter with hashtag #TheRedemption, but it may take more than a single win to convince some followers of the sport that Stipe Miocic didn’t steal a bit of his soul during their fight.

Midnight Mania! Financial Documents Reveal ONE’s Statement Of Income

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

ONE FC- technically ONE Championship now- are an important fighting organization in Asia. They just signed Eddie Alvarez, in their first notable American signing since Ben Askren ended his career there. Their CEO, Chatri Sityodtong, is known for his bold pronouncements. They ARE very good at raising venture capital… but so far, they have been losing money- a lot of money.

Bloody Elbow’s John Nash reported on their financials, and they revealed a company that is yet to live up to its’ promises.

It turns out that while their revenue is growing, ONE’s losses are also growing, reaching an accumulated total of almost $ 93 million (in Singapore dollars) at the end of 2017. This wouldn’t be entirely unheard of, with the UFC itself reportedly bleeding money in the early years, but the UFC was a rarity in that it eventually turned the ship around. Many MMA promotions have not been as lucky, Nash noting that IFL and Elite XC went down similar paths in terms of losses before eventually closing down.

However, ONE has been able to alleviate concerns by continuing to raise money, closing 2017 with 45 million in the bank, and raising a staggering 260 million Singapore dollars in three offerings of shares. In addition, their revenue has risen year by year- but not as quickly as expenses. ONE spends an ever-increasing stream of cash on consultants and marketing.

Bloody Elbow

Chatri Sityodtong explained how this fit into ONE’s strategy, a slightly more sophisticated version of ‘Fake it till you make it’, but with a fanbase.

“There is no difference between Facebook’s business model and ours. in the first few years, all that Facebook cared about was users. Eventually, when their user base was huge, they could go to advertisers. We care about fans. (Eventually) we will go to broadcasters and advertisers.”

“Reach versus monetization is a trade-off. We have had the benefit of our capital and now investors who see the world our way. We aim to create the purity of engagement, get scale, then monetize at scale,”

It is a strategy that could still pay off- and for the sake of international competition for MMA fighters like Eddie Alvarez, let’s hope it does.

Insomnia

Megan Anderson vs. Cat Zingano is a great fight and a good backup to Cyborg vs. Nunes

Hopefully Dustin Poirier gets some good news.

Is he angling for a fight with Tony Ferguson? Because while Ferguson has richly earned his title shot, I would also watch that all day.

Alexander Gustafsson looks a lot buffer as a cartoon Viking

If Mike Tyson is your referee, you should be scared- very scared.

Demetrious Johnson is only just now a brown belt, but he’s been tapping black belts for years

I mean… they do knock first.

Chuck Liddell shouldn’t shave clean
