Tatsuya Kawajiri draws Sean Soriano for UFC debut in Singapore

“Crusher” has a new opponent for his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut!

Japanese mixed martial arts (MMA) standout Tatsuya Kawajiri was expected to face Hacran Dias in his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut at UFC Fight Night 34 in Singapore. Unfortunately, Dias was forced to pull out of the bout after suffering an injury in training.

Kawajiri represents the very best in JMMA as he’s been able to find success in every major Japanese promotion, including kickboxing. He even found success in his one appearance inside ONE FC’s cage, when he left Japan to fight Donald Sanchez. The one time he ventured outside of Asia, he lost, when he faced Gilbert Melendez in Strikeforce.

UFC officials announced on Thursday that they found a suitable replacement for “Crusher.” Stepping in on short notice is a prospect out of the Blackzilians named Sean Soriano. Soriano carries an undefeated record as he makes his promotional debut.

UFC Fight Night 34 serves as the first event to stream on the UFC’s digital network that will be launched in 2014. While it is known how the card will air, it is currently unknown what time it will be shown for North and South American fans.

Tatsuya Kawajiri set to face Hacran Dias in UFC debut at UFC 34 in Singapore

Newly signed featherweight Tatsuya Kawajiri didn’t have to wait long before getting an opponent for his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut.

“Crusher” will be squaring off with Hacran Dias at UFC Fight Night 34: Ellenberger vs. Saffiedine in Singapore on Jan. 4, 2014 at the Marina Bay Sands. The news was first reported on Sunday night (Nov. 3, 2013) by Fight Sport Asia who confirmed the bout with sources inside Kawajiri’s camp.

Kawajiri is a legend of sorts in Japanese Mixed Martial Arts (JMMA) circles as one of the top fighters to ever compete in Japan. He’s currently on a five-fight winning streak that includes wins over Joachim Hansen at Dream 17 and Michihiro Omigawa at Dream 18. The Omigawa fight was his last, as Kawajiri has not competed in combat sports in 2013.

Dias is currently 1-1 in the promotion with a win over Yuri Alcantara and a decision loss to Nik Lentz. Dias is a Nova Uniao product and considered one of the top fighters from the legendary Brazilian camp.

This is the second bout announce for the UFC’s first card in Singapore. The main event will pit Jake Ellenberger against Tarec Saffiedine.

One FC returns to Singapore with Bibiano Fernandes vs. Soo Chul Kim as main event

One FC announced it is set to return to Singapore with a clash between bantamweight titleholder Soo Chul Kim and interim champion Bibiano Fernandes as the main event on Oct. 18 in Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Kim won the inaugural One FC bantamweight championship with a TKO victory over Leandro Issa last October, improving his MMA record to 7-4. Fernandes enters the title bout riding a six-fight win streak, including victories for DREAM and One FC titles.

“That kid is tough, comes forward, and I anticipate a good fight,” Fernandes told MMAFighting.com. “He has a good striking game, I like his style. I fought so many good fighters, it’s just one more fight for me. I will get the win.”

Bibiano’s high level jiu-jitsu game should give him the edge on the ground, but he doesn’t focus on only one strategy.

“I train everything, I need to be ready for everything,” he explains. “I don’t like to have any weaknesses.”

Fernandes heard critics when he opted not to sign with the UFC in the past, and he’s in peace with his decision.

“People can say anything, but at the end of the day it’s between me and my family,” he said. “I can’t start (my career) all over again. I have fought a lot in my career, fought in jiu-jitsu for no money. But I didn’t need money at that time. I have family and kids now. Fighting in Asia, with 20,000 fans in the arena, is what I want now.”

UFC announces return to China, debut in Singapore

301_mark_fischer

The UFC announced that it will hold events in Singapore and Macau during the first quarter of 2014 on Thursday at a press conference in Beijing, China.

Mark Fischer, the head of UFC Asia, announced an event at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore which he targeted for early in the first quarter of next year.

He also announced a March date to return to the Venetian in Macau, which would serve as the finals of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter China, which debuts in November on Liaoning Satellite TV. The station is available to approximately 830 million of the 1,344,000,000 residents of China.

“We’ll have well-known fighters on the main card, but we want to fill the card with more Asian fighters,” said Fischer to Reuters. “We really want to build a base and …create more relevance with local audiences.”

Sean Shelby, who does the matchmaking for the UFC’s 125, 135 and 145 pound weight classes, as well as the women, has gone on previous scouting trips to China and is headed to other countries in Asia with the goal of discovering and developing fighters from the area. The attempt is to create the first generation of local stars through a Chinese version of the reality show, similar to the company’s marketing plan in a number of new locations.

Shelby will oversee tryouts on July 21 in Beijing at the Metropark Lido Hotel, July 25 in Singapore at the Marina Bay Sands, and August 3 in Macau at the Venetian, looking for featherweights, lightweights and welterweight fighters.

No coaches were announced for the series at the press conference but Fischer strongly hinted one of them would be Tiequan Zhang (15-4), who comes from Inner Mongolia in China. There have been reports the other coach would be Cung Le (9-2).

“We are still at the investment stage but we do see tremendous long-term potential here,” said Fischer. “TUF China is a watershed. We believe it’s going to do more for growing the brand and the sport of MMA among the Greater China audience than any other program to date.”

The March show will be the second at the Venetian in Macau. The debut show on Nov. 10, headlined by Le’s first-round knockout of Rich Franklin, drew 8,415 fans and a $ 1.3 million gate But it was an audience very new to mixed martial arts, not really having an emotional involvement or understanding of the sport and its fighters.
