Bellator 206 Results: Gegard Mousasi Eats Rory MacDonald for Dinner, Spits Out His Bones

In case you were wondering, the best welterweight in Bellator is no match for the best middleweight in Bellator.

In the main event of Bellator 206, champ Rory MacDonald said, “Screw it, I’m going to see how I do against champ Gegard Mousasi,” and the results weren’t pretty.

First of all, MacDonald got tore up on the feet. Mousasi – long time an ace striker – was just too fast and too accurate with his jab and kicks. A few times MacDonald got through and landed something, but he was otherwise toast in the stand-up department.

Not feeling the love on the feet, MacDonald said, “Screw it, I’m going to try one of those rolling techniques that Japanese leglock specialists used to do back in the day.” But Mousasi simply stuffed him, took mount, and beat the living daylights out of him.

This was an intriguing fight on paper because it had the best of two divisions going at it. But in reality, it wasn’t close.

Midnight Mania! Scott Coker on Rory Macdonald: ‘This Guy Is Nuts’

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Scott Coker knew Rory Macdonald’s reputation when he brought the current Bellator welterweight champion over from the UFC, but when Rory fully lived up to the eager disregard for pain he had shown in his UFC career, Coker was still a little shook. He spoke to Rory after the Canadian had won the title in a fight with Douglas Lima that Macdonald himself described as the toughest bout of his career. Via MMAFighting.com:

“Two weeks later, he calls me and he’s like, ‘I’m ready to schedule a fight,’” Coker said. “I said, ‘Rory, no, no. You need to put on the brakes here for a second. Let’s just rest.’ He said, ‘No, no, I’m ready. I’m just about ready to walk. I still have a limp, but I think I can start training in another week.’ I’m like, ‘This guy is nuts.’”

“He just wants to fight, he wants to stay busy,” Coker said of MacDonald. “He wants to get out there and compete. So, I think it’s my job to slow him down. He’s chomping at the bit. And he wanted this fight with Gegard and Gegard wanted to fight him. And they wanted to test themselves.”

While Rory didn’t get back into action as quickly as he would have liked, he did get the superfight he was angling for, at a stacked Bellator 206 on September 29 against middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi. After that, no matter the result, he plans on competing in the Bellator welterweight Grand Prix, with Coker targeting a February date against Jon Fitch. His welterweight belt will be on the line in each of his fights throughout the tourney, other competitors including Douglas Lima, Andrey Koreshkov, Paul Daley, Michael Page, Ed Ruth, and Neiman Gracie.

“I have never met a fighter like Rory,” Coker said.

Midnight Mania! Rory Macdonald and Ben Askren Feud Online

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

This MMA fan tagged Rory Macdonald and Ben Askren in a tweet and started a string of trash talk between the retired former Bellator and ONE welterweight champion and the current 170-lb. Red King of Bellator. Rory said he is absolutely down for a fight with his fellow crypto-currency believer, who has been trash-talking him for years.

MacDonald’s “i disagree” reply here is genuinely hilarious because being succinct is always better online.

Askren said to tell Bellator president Scott Coker, to which Rory promptly tagged Scott Coker and said he has talked to Coker about getting Askren to return to Bellator.

Then the discussion got personal. Rory Macdonald said he challenged Askren face to face, and Askren tucked his tail between his legs and said “I only fight for money”.

Askren called the Rory’s tweet “fake news” but didn’t exactly deny Rory’s account either.

I agree with Brian Stann and Big John McCarthy- this is a fight Bellator should absolutely make. Askren’s wrestling ability, as a former Olympian, has never been in question, but he never got the chance to prove himself against elite competition. Rory Macdonald is undeniably elite competition, and one of Bellator’s most credible and interesting champions. He holds a lopsided win over Askren’s college buddy, UFC champion Tyron Woodley. And there is the outside chance he might be a route to get to MacDonald’s teammate Georges St. Pierre, a fight Askren has been campaigning for and GSP has been so far totally uninterested in.
