Stephen Thompson Eyeing Fight With Robbie Lawler Early Next Year

Fans will have to wait to see the next title fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight division after the champ Tyron Woodley was forced to withdraw from his fight with Colby Covington due to a thumb injury he suffered in his win over Darren Till. However, there could be another high profile welterweight bout joining them in early 2019 between former champion and knockout artist Robbie Lawler and two-time title challenger Stephen Thompson.

‘Wonderboy’ Wants A Piece Of ‘Ruthless’ Robbie

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight No. 1 contender, Stephen Thompson, has been eliminated from the 170-pound title chase after suffering a unanimous decision loss to Darren Till at UFC Fight Night 130 back in May.

But “Wonderboy” isn’t going to sit home and cry in his Cheerios about the controversy surrounding his Liverpool loss. Instead, he’s going to find someone “Ruthless” enough to get him back into the welterweight title hunt.

“With Robbie Lawler, he’s coming off a knee injury,” Thompson told MMA Junkie. “I was just thinking, ‘Robbie Lawler’s out for a little bit. I might be out for a little bit. Let’s call for Robbie Lawler and maybe the timing will be fairly right.’ Hopefully we can fight each other.”

Thompson (14-3-1) jumped out to an electric 13-1 start to his mixed martial arts (MMA) career, but after battling to a five-round draw against Tyron Woodley at UFC 205 in New York, “Wonderboy” is just 1-2, all of which were decisions.

Lawler (28-12, 1 NC), meanwhile, was creamed by “The Chosen One” at UFC 201 in Atlanta, and has appeared just twice in the aftermath, splitting a pair of decisions against Donald Cerrone (W) and Rafael dos Anjos (L).

Thompson vs. Lawler … who wants it?

Midnight Mania! Watch that 24-second Rafael Dos Anjos blitz on Robbie Lawler from Bruce Buffer’s seat

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA, each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Rafael Dos Anjos is a monster. Robbie Lawler is an animal. When they collided at this weekend’s UFC event, there was a lot of anticipation. While Rafael dos Anjos ended up running away with the bout on the scorecards, the collision of dos Anjos’ endless cardio with Lawler’s limitless toughness did result in one of the most remarkable sequences I’ve seen in a long time.

It’s rare in MMA, with 4-ounce gloves, to get a blitz this long without a fighter either going unconscious or finding a way to break the attack. Lawler did neither, covering up, taking shots on his shoulders and simply absorbing what he couldn’t avoid. That’s his superpower, and it was on full display last night. Afterwards, all dos Anjos could say?

My hands are hurting because I hit the guy in the head. He’s got a pretty tough head.

Insomnia

Which option is next for Rafael dos Anjos?

This should be immortalized, because it is truly the quintessential answer MMA deserves, from Kamaru Usman.

Stipe Miocic, fighting fires or fighting heavyweights. It’s all fighting.

Fighting is in my blood!

Heavyweight boxer Ray Mercer knocked out Tim Sylvia, so he’s an authority in two sports and he had this amazing insight to share:

Throwback to this amazing video of boxing coach Eric Kelly.

John Wayne Parr compared himself to Mirko Cro Cop, because, well, why not. They do kinda look alike.

This qualifies as martial arts… right?

Widely respected MMA coach Robert Follis died this weekend. It was ruled a suicide. May he rest in peace. Many fighters have had remarkably good things to say about Follis’ impact on their lives, including Nate Quarry and Kevin Lee.

I have nothing to say about this.

I have nothing to say about this either, frankly, except that it was an awesome fight.

Daniel Cormier managed to piss off a lot of pro wrestlers over the weekend with his criticism of… whatever this is…

Oh, and he also admitted he thinks Yoel Romero would beat him in a straight wrestling match.

Slips, Rips, KO Clips

Safe to say he was not ready for this.

I love a good body shot.

A spinning wheel kick KO is special.

Robbie Lawler has been around a long time. So long, in fact, that he remembers when Dana White had hair. But in the time since he first set foot in the Octagon, he’s been on winning streaks, been on losing streaks, won a belt, and took part in some absolute wars. He is the human […]

UFC on FOX 26 Primer: What’s Left for Robbie Lawler?

UFC 37, in Bossier City, Louisiana. That was when Robbie Lawler first stepped into the Octagon. (I was there. It was awesome.) Since then, he’s had some ups and downs, and some more ups and downs, and in the span of 13 years was a late-career welterweight champ. That’s a lot to have accomplished – so […]
