White Rips ‘Cokehead Junkie’ Over Fighter Pay

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President, Dana White, already knew that a third fight between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz would be a bona fide disaster, which is why he refused to entertain the idea after it first came to light back in early 2017.

Former boxer-turned-mixed martial arts (MMA) promoter, Oscar de la Hoya, did not share the same outlook on the future of “The Iceman.” In fact, when starting Golden Boy MMA, De La Hoya insisted it would correct the mistakes UFC made with its fighters.

Starting with a little more money and a lot more respect.

On the surface, it doesn’t appear he accomplished either goal. Several combatants were paid outrageously low purses for their participation in last weekend’s event in California, while others were so far down the totem pole, De La Hoya couldn’t even name them.

“Oscar fucking De La Hoya says, ‘Oh, come over to Golden Boy where we respect the fighters and it makes me sick what these fighters were paid’ and all this shit,” White told the UFC Unfiltered podcast (via MMA Fighting). “Out of 14 fights on the card, five bouts were amateur fights. Which means he didn’t pay them jack shit, right? What the fuck are you talking about you cokehead junkie? Some of the guys on the card made $ 1,000 and $ 1,000. And he respects the fighters so much, he couldn’t remember their fucking names at the press conference.”

UFC pay has been a touchy subject for White and Co. over the last few years, to the point where fighters brought the matter before the courts. In addition, the promotion has come under fire for the way it disrespects its champions.

That sent a handful of combatants to the competition. Not just for Scott Coker and Bellator MMA (sample here and here), but also to ONE Championship in Singapore, which has emerged as a new player in the fight game (leading to this).

No telling if Golden Boy MMA will make its return to cage fighting now that Liddell has been knocked out (watch the replay here), but if and when it does, rest assured White will have something to say about it.

UFC 228 Results: Aljamain Sterling Nearly Rips Opponent’s Leg Off and Takes It Home

He may fluctuate between super-hot prospect and prospect-suddenly-derailed, but Aljamain Sterling has got skills. And he put those skills on display against Cody Stamann at UFC 228 tonight, nailing an ultra-rare kind of kneebar that left Stamann writhing in pain on the Octagon floor.

It was a kneebar from back-mount, folks, and Sterling is only the second person to ever get in in the UFC. It came after a first round full of both Sterling and Stamann throwing heat while vying for dominance with their respective wrestling chops. “Aljo” kicked it up a notch in the second and started nailing those takedowns, and once that started happening, Stamann’s scrambling game took over – and Sterling began to eat him alive.

Sterling had mount in no time, and then back-mount, where he very nearly hit a full-Nelson submission. Stamann gutted it out, but when he rose with Sterling riding him like a backpack, he exposed his leg… which was the opening Sterling needed.

When Stamann fell, his knee twisted, and he was tapping immediately.

Yikes.

Result: Aljamain Sterling def. Cody Stamann via Submission (Kneebar) at 3:42, R2

Miocic Rips UFC, Dana White For Brock Lesnar ‘S—t Show’

Prior to his UFC 226 title defense against Daniel Cormier, then-heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic, told the combat sports media he would be willing to fight Brock Lesnar after giving birth to his daughter and taking some time off to enjoy her arrival.

But now that Lesnar — and the monster payday that comes with him — has been afforded to Cormier after “DC” captured the crown earlier this month in Las Vegas, Nevada, Miocic has changed his tune on the “shit show” that transpired on fight night.

“It was a shit show and it was disrespectful,” Miocic told ESPN. “I didn’t think that was what the UFC was all about. How can you give a guy a title shot who hasn’t fought in over two years, is suspended, and his last fight is a no-contest because he was taking PEDs?”

To be fair, this happens in other sports too. I remember when the Dallas Cowboys were eliminated from the playoffs in early 2017 but went on to play in the Super Bowl anyway because they can sell more tickets and more network ad space than the Atlanta Falcons.

Oh wait, that never happened, because football is a real sport where records and rankings actually mean something! So sorry. Let’s get back to Miocic, who doesn’t understand the difference between sports and prizefighting, but does recognize the difference between a real apology and a fake one.

“It was like a two-second conversation, [White] apologized for everything that happened in the cage,” Miocic said. “I just said, ‘Whatever.’ The apology didn’t mean anything. That’s what they want to happen.”

I can’t believe Miocic is suggesting this was planned.

Either way, Cormier is expected to fight Lesnar in early 2019, assuming Mark Hunt’s attorneys don’t pull off some kind of wacky injunction. Then again, if you ask this ex-champ, the WWE import is never going to make it to fight night anyway.
