Raquel Pennington’s Coach Defends Sending Out for Fifth Round

In the main event of UFC 224 on Saturday night, challenger Raquel Pennington gave champ Amanda Nunes everything she had, but it wasn’t even close. Pennington took a beating.

But Pennington is hella resilient, and always has been, so she hung in there. That is, until the fourth round ended, at which point Pennington went back to her corner and informed her coach she was done.

Coach Jason Kutz wasn’t having it. He ignored her, and she went out for the fifth round, took even more of a beating, and was eventually TKO’d.

Many were appalled at Kutz’s seeming lack of compassion for his fighter. Did Pennington really need to take all that extra damage? If she said she was done, then she should’ve been done – right?

Kutz appeared on “The MMA Hour” to defend himself.

“What I’m going to say is, the way she said it, and more importantly, the look in her eye — that’s what I don’t think people understand,” Kutz said. “When you spend four hours a day doing what she does and doing what we do, I know her. I can read her face like a book. And I know that had she stopped [the fight] right then and there, and I’ve talked to her about this afterward — like, ‘Hey, in 10 years when you look back at this, I think you’d be kicking yourself in the pants had you not gone out there.’

“I knew it was going to take an extraordinary effort, because she had to stop Amanda. She had to do something huge, right? Something extra ordinary. And if I didn’t think that Raquel could do something extraordinary, then hey, we would’ve went the other way with it. And the thing is, like I said, the mentality of her at that moment, I just felt if she could somehow flip it around and go out there and do something extraordinary, we got a chance. And you know what? She trained her ass off for a long time to get this title shot, and in the fifth round of the title fight, I know her leg hurts, but hey, I thought that she could go out there and go.”

What do you think? Should Pennington’s coach have thrown in the towel before Round 5?

UFC 224 Results: Amanda Nunes Brutalizes Raquel Pennington, Keeps Belt

It’s great being durable, but that trait can only take you so far.

Such is the case with Raquel Pennington, who challenged champ Amanda Nunes for her bantamweight belt last night in the main event of UFC 224. To her credit, Pennington took a beating and kept coming; alas, that doesn’t win fights.

Right from the outset, it was clear Nunes had all the power, as evidenced by her leg-kicks that sent Pennington to the canvas, and her combos and cage control, which constantly had Pennington on her back-foot and boxed in against the cage. None of her attempts at takedowns bore fruit in the first, although she did manage on in the second.

By Round 3, Pennington’s eye was a mess, and Nunes wasn’t doing her any favors with the way she was aggressively out-boxing her. Nunes even scored a takedown of her own.

Nunes hit another takedown in the fourth, and opened up a cut on Pennington’s nose with a knee. It was only a matter of time, and Nunes needed about half of Round 5 to pound the challenger out.

Amanda Nunes vs Raquel Pennington staredown video from UFC 224 media day

admin / March 20, 2018 / No comments

Big Nog in the house!

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) held a special media day on Tuesday (March 20) to help promote the women’s bantamweight title fight between current division champion Amanda Nunes and top contender Raquel Pennington, who collide in the upcoming UFC 224 pay-per-view (PPV) main event on May 12 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Nunes (15-4) hasn’t competed since Sept. of 2017 where she outpointed Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 215. Prior to that, “Lioness” had an even better showing by knocking out former division titleholder Ronda Rousey in under two minutes.

Hear “Rowdy’s” take on that loss here.

As for Pennington (9-5), she fought her way up the 135-pound ladder by winning four in a row and hasn’t tasted defeat since dropping a close split-decision to another former champion, Holly Holm, way back in 2015.

The winner could be in line for this super fight.

To see who else is competing at the upcoming UFC 224 combat sports extravaganza, which also features the all-Brazilian co-main event between former champions Vitor Belfort and Lyoto Machida, click here.

UFC fighters Tecia Torres, Raquel Pennington get engaged

admin / May 14, 2017 / No comments

There might be a pair of Penningtons making noise in two UFC divisions before long.

UFC fighters Tecia Torres and Raquel Pennington got engaged to be married Saturday, Torres announced on Instagram. The two, who have been dating since last year, recently bought a home together in Pennington’s home state of Colorado. Torres wrote posted a picture of Pennington down on one knee.

“Our love began unexpectedly,” Torres wrote. “It started as a crush and grew into an amazing love. In this moment you made my dreams for us come true. Everyday you show me a love so true and pure. I am blessed to wake up to you every morning and fall asleep in your arms at night. I can’t wait to become Mrs. Pennington.”

Pennington also posted a picture of the moment, ring in hand.

“Couldn’t be anymore complete,” Pennington wrote. “She said YES!!! And we had and amazing day with all our wonderful friends and family celebrating our new home.”

Torres, 27, is a top contender in the UFC women’s strawweight division, most recently defeating Bec Rawlings in February by unanimous decision. “Tiny Tornado” also earned her Master’s degree in criminology from Florida Atlantic University last week.

Pennington, 28, is on a four-fight winning streak, including a unanimous decision win over Miesha Tate at UFC 205 last November. “Rocky” could be nearing a title shot with another victory.
