Midnight Mania! MMA Fans Head Kick Transit Officer in Perth Following UFC 221

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight …

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Watching a UFC event is supposed to be one of those “don’t try this on the way home, kids” experiences, but after UFC 221 in Perth, Australia, a couple drunk fans didn’t see it that way. Via Perthnow.com:

Police allege the men, from Rockingham and Wellard, were intoxicated and becoming loud and abusive about 3.25pm on Sunday, on their way home from the city’s first-ever UFC fight at Perth Arena.

PTA officers requested them to curb their behaviour and then asked them to leave the train at the next stop, Bull Creek station.

But it’s then alleged a fight took place with officers at the station and that one PTA employee was knocked out, after being kicked in the head.

The 32-year-old transit officer who was knocked out was left with severe concussion, swelling and bruises to the back and side of his head. He spent a night in hospital.

The other officer, aged 35, has swelling and bruising to the side of his face and jaw and is awaiting blood test results after being spat on.

With full-strength alcohol available from 6:30 AM Australian time, perhaps the bigger surprise is that more fans weren’t out of control. Only three people were ejected from Perth Arena for disorderly conduct, out of 12,000 fans. However, the 20 and 25-year old who fought the public officers face several charges, including escaping lawful custody, assaulting a public officer and endangering the life, health and safety of a person.

Insomnia

Alastair Overeem waxed poetic on the highs and lows of MMA after Luke Rockhold’s KO loss.

Someone fight Zabit Magomedsharipov.

I love good head movement.

We used to admire this man.

I hate Derrick Lewis for posting this video.

He even posted a reply meme!

Chris Weidman training with Muay Thai legend John Wayne Parr, adding tools to the arsenal.

Muay Thai sweeps are awesome.

Ilir Latifi and Alex Gustafsson getting some clinch work in.

Mischief managed.

Yoel Romero had the most success when he just rushed Rockhold, who moved back in straight lines all the way across the Octagon:

Al Iaquinta points out exactly what’s wrong with UFC 3: he’s making exactly zero money off his likeness.

Because the fighters have so much leverage. This fan doesn’t understand how monopsony works in labor markets.

Kajan Johnson and Nathan Quarry explaining to more ignorant fans how little the UFC fighters get paid as professional athletes at the highest level of their sport. It never fails to surprise me how many fans don’t understand this. Fighters talk about money all the time now because they realize how little of it they are getting from a 5 billion dollar company.

Israel Adesanya has a social media game.

Derrick Lewis appreciated this, and so do I.

Dustin Poirier hates the memes around the picture of Romero kissing Rockhold.

The memes surrounding this uncomfortable image will not go away, despite Poirier’s feelings on the matter.

In the comments, Cody Garbrandt asked Sage Northcutt, where is the neck tattoo?

Should Luke Rockhold get back to his roots?

Slips, Rips, and KO Clips

This combination is unreal from Tenshin.

A reminder of just what new UFC middleweight Israel Adesanya is capable of:

I can’t remember if I posted this yet

I have never seen a triangle this dedicated.

That’s next level commitment.

Yoel Romero has been terrifying for a long, long time.

This kid is incredible

This was fun

Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller arrested for alleged assault of officer

Jason “Mayhem” Miller is in legal trouble again. The retired mixed martial arts fighter was arrested early Friday morning outside his California house on suspicion of assaulting an officer, representatives from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to MMAFighting.com following an initial report by NBC Los Angeles.

Authorities showed up to Miller’s residence after receiving reports of a disturbance in the early morning hours Friday. Miller allegedly threw a ceramic tile at officials and threatened them with a fire extinguisher and metal pole during an eight-minute stand-off, before ultimately being subdued with a taser and taken into custody on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.

Two women were found inside the home, though both refused to cooperate with the investigation.

The arrest is the latest of a string of incidents involving Miller since the fighter’s retirement from mixed martial arts in early 2012.

Miller, 34, was arrested in Aug. 2012 after being found naked inside a trashed California church, though all charges were eventually dropped. Miller was then arrested in 2013 on two counts of felony domestic violence. That case is still in pending.

Miller was arrested again in 2014 after memorably barricading himself inside his Mission Viejo home for over four hours after law enforcement officials attempted to serve him a bench warrant for his arrest on prior domestic violence charges. Miller live tweeted a majority of the incident over Twitter.

Miller added to his total earlier this year when in March he was arrested after allegedly brawling with officers outside a nightclub in Laguna Beach.

Miller (28-9, 1 NC) last fought in May 2012 when he lost a unanimous decision to C.B. Dollaway, after which he was cut by the UFC.

Over the course of his 15-year career, Miller defeated the likes of Robbie Lawler, Tim Kennedy, and Kazushi Sakuraba while competing for a litany of notable MMA promotions, including the UFC, WEC, DREAM and Strikeforce.

Miller also hosted the popular MTV show “Bully Beatdown,” which featured many prominent MMA fighters.

Vedepo was charged with five misdemeanors in the wake of the incident.

The 31-year-old Vedepo is 4-3 in seven Bellator fights. He also went 0-2 in a UFC stint in 2008-09.

Bellator fighter Joe Vedepo arrested after allegedly assaulting, hospitalizing police officer

Bellator light heavyweight Joe Vedepo was arrested this past Friday afternoon after allegedly hospitalizing an Iowa City police officer during a drunken altercation outside of a sports bar.

According to a report from KCRG, officers responded around 2:22 p.m. to a call from Sports Column indicating that Vedepo, 31, was intoxicated and refused to leave the premises. Vedepo reportedly told officers that he “knew his rights” and resisted law efforts as he attempted to reenter the bar, ultimately head-butting one officer in the chest, sending him to the hospital with back injuries.

“Officers took Vedepo to the ground and attempted to handcuff him, but he rolled his body and kicked his legs,” the report went on to state. “Officers deployed a Taser in an attempt to subdue Vedepo, but it was ineffective, police said. According to criminal complaints, it took several officers to pull Vedepo’s hands behind his back.

“Police said Vedepo was placed in the back of one squad car, but needed to be transferred to another. After he was moved, he began to kick at officers and made contact with one of them, police said.”

Vedepo was found to have a blood-alcohol level of .241, over than three times the legal limit. He was arrested and remains booked on $ 10,000 bail in Johnson County Iowa Jail, where he is being charged with two counts of assault on peace officers, one count of assault causing injury to a peace officer, one count of public intoxication, and one count of interfering with official acts.

A veteran of both the UFC and Bellator, Vedepo (17-9) suffered a lopsided and sustained defeat on short notice at the hands of Muhammed Lawal two weeks ago at Bellator 131, ultimately losing via third-round TKO to drop his Bellator record to 4-4.

Garry Cook promoted to UFC Chief Global Officer

Controversial former Manchester City soccer team CEO Garry Cook, who joined the UFC two years ago to head operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, is moving to Las Vegas to take over as the promotion’s Chief Global Officer.

This would make Cook one of the most powerful figures in the organization, as he would be in charge of all the international territories.

Sources within the promotion confirmed the appointment earlier Thursday, as did Dana White via text message on Thursday night.

“(The) guy is a f***ig stud,” said White, who made the same statement several times in recent months at European shows, when talking about how Cook was the right guy to build the brand in Europe. Cook had been running the company’s U.K. office.

Cook had lived in the U.S. in the 80s and 90s, including a stint at Nike, where he was the head of “Brand Jordan.” Cook was CEO of Manchester City from 2008 to 2011, and started with UFC one year later.

As part of the reorganization of the international division, Mark Fischer, who had been Executive Vice President and Managing Director for Asia for the past four years, has been released. Fischer had been a key player in establishing the NBA brand in China before coming to the UFC. The promotion had hoped to be able to expand its brand into mainland China, which is a difficult place to navigate.

Over Fischer’s four years, they were able to run several shows in Macau, and produce a season of The Ultimate Fighter on Chinese television, but had not been able to break into the largest cities in China for live events.

Anderson Silva studying to become a LAPD officer

Anderson Silva wants to be a Hollywood star, fight Roy Jones Jr. in a boxing match and return to the UFC in 2015. Now, you can add “becoming a police officer” to Silva’s wish list.

The former UFC middleweight champion won’t return to the Octagon in 2014, so apparently he’s using his time off to recover from the injury he suffered against Chris Weidman and study to become a cop in Los Angeles, California, where he lives with his wife and kids.

“I train every morning, take my kids to school and go to the police school,” Silva told Folha de Sao Paulo in Brazil. “I’m studying at the Los Angeles School Police Department. I’m studying to become a police officer.”

Silva doesn’t plan to put on the uniform and fight against crime, though. According to the UFC star, he wants to honor his uncle, who raised him in Curitiba.

“It’s a personal wish, something that will make my uncle happy,” he explained. “He thought it was a little weird that I’m not doing this here (in Brazil), but it wasn’t the right time. My brothers are police officers, my nephews are police officers. It’s a family thing.”
