UFC 229 Primer: But What If Khabib Nurmagomedov Beats Conor McGregor?

Lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov is finally getting the big fight he deserves at UFC 229 this weekend.

Sure, he won the belt, and by default, anytime you win a belt it should be considered a “big” fight. But he did it by defeating Al Iaquinta – a tough, but part-time fighter – and the bout everyone wanted, against Tony Ferguson, constantly eluded him.

Now it’s time for Conor McGregor, the biggest star of all. Khabib is undoubtedly getting pay-per-view points for his role, and since it’s Conor we’re talking about, that means the Dagestani is going to make bank like never before.

But a question remains. Sure, McGregor can easily knock out wrestlers, and could very well put Nurmagomedov to sleep on Saturday night. And Khabib can certainly take McGregor down and pound him into oblivion…

…But if Khabib does, then what?

When Nate Diaz defeated McGregor in their first go-around, it set up one of the most anticipated UFC fights ever. Seriously, Diaz got so rich off the rematch, he now owns slaves.

What will a victory mean for Nurmagomedov, though? Will there be a rematch, and another chance for both me to soak up more pay-per-view percentage points?

Honestly, it’s probably not up to Nurmagomedov what happens next if he wins. Nor is it up to the UFC.

It will be up to Conor.

But Really, Can Conor McGregor Beat Khabib Nurmagomedov?

I’m just going to keep asking if Conor McGregor can beat Khabib Nurmagomedov over and over again until they fight at UFC 229. Why? Because if the UFC is going to milk their golden calf for pay-per-view riches, I can at least squeeze out some web traffic!

Obviously, McGregor can beat Khabib. Heck, he might even knock the Dagestani wrestler out, snatching away that lightweight belt. Remember what happened when the Irishman faced another wrestler whom everyone thought would grind him into putty?

Anyway, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: besides being a killer in the cage (but not the boxing ring!), McGregor is the master of hype. I know this, you know this, and the UFC knows this. Hence, these vids they’ve put together.

You know you’re doing something right when the UFC makes a highlight reel of just you saying stuff. And for McGregor, they did it twice!

Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov Meet Again in New York, No Windows Smashed

They last time they were together, Khabib Nurmagomedov was sitting on a bus and Conor McGregor was smashing windows to get inside. This time, there was no smashing. This time, there was just whiskey and unkind words.

The UFC lightweight champ and the former lightweight champ met today at Radio City Music Hall in New York City to hype their upcoming clash, which will take place on October 6 at UFC 229. Since this is the biggest fight the UFC has in the works right now, of course the Dagestani and Irishman were put on a stage to talk trash to each other.

For his part, Nurmagomedov was pretty subdued… which is about what you’d expect. Ol’ Khabib isn’t much of a trashtalker, and there’s no way he’d ever out-talk McGregor.

McGregor was his usual self. He even brought a bottle of his new line of whiskey, and he coaxed boss Dana White to have a glass with him.

Notable Conor McGregor-isms from the press-only affair include:

  • McGregor complaining that there were no fans there, only media. (Obviously, this was done for security reasons, because the last thing the UFC needs is McGregor fans and Khabib fans going berserk and killing each other… which they would do.)
  • Tons of trashtalk about Nurmagomedov’s ties to Russian warlords and criminals, because yes, Khabib does have some connections to them.
  • Conor promising to break Nurmagomedov’s “rat jaw”.

Also worth noting is that when McGregor and Nurmagomedov squared off for the usual staredown, there were a handful of NYPD officers standing close by. I guess that whole bus incident left an impression, eh?

Here’s the video of the press conference.
