‘Shoe Face’ Draws Theodorou At UFC Fight Night 137

Streaking middleweight contender Antonio Carlos Junior will look to win his sixth straight when he takes on Canadian grinder Elias Theodorou at UFC Fight Night 137 on Sept. 22 from inside Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil, according to MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz who confirmed an initial report by Combate.

Remember, Carlos Junior was expected to fight middleweight knockout artist Derek Brunson at UFC 227 on Aug. 4 from Los Angeles before an eye injury knocked Brunson out of competition.

Carlos Junior, 28, has quickly turned into one of the most dangerous submission specialists in UFC today. During his current five-fight win streak, which includes a recent victory over veteran Tim Boetsch back in April, “Shoe Face” has recorded four submissions. His hands have developed nicely behind some natural punching power, but Carlos Junior will be out to prove yet again at UFC Sao Paulo that he’s the best grappler at 185 pounds.

Theodorou, 30, is coming off back-to-back wins over Trevor Smith and Dan Kelly, who is the last fighter to defeat Carlos Junior inside of the Octagon. While “Spartan” hasn’t finished many of his UFC wins he remains a dangerous out for anyone in the middleweight division. Throughout nine UFC appearances, Theodorou has utilized a strong wrestling game and trusted motor to walk away with seven wins.

UFC Fight Night 137 currently has no main event in place, but will feature a welterweight clash between Neil Magny and Brazilian finisher Alex Oliveira, as well as the anticipated return of light heavyweight veteran Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

Nick Newell Comes Up Short on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series

It is an amazing story. Nick Newell, born with a congenital defect that left him with just one arm, forged an improbable career for himself in mixed martial arts. And it’s been a career full of wins! In fact, his only loss was to Justin Gaethje in the WSOF.

Of course Newell has been itching to get a shot in the Octagon, and everyone has been rooting for him, so Dana White relented and gave him a shot in the main event of tonight’s Tuesday Night Contender Series. His opponent was a rusty Team Alpha Male wrestling coach named Alex Munoz.

And for three rounds, Munoz beat Newell up.

I’ve watched Newell compete in the past, and was hoping he’d pull it off, because his tale is so compelling and heartwarming and would make for much better television than trotting CM Punk into the cage to die. But Munoz beaned him good in the face, and wrestled the hell out of him. For the briefest of moments, Newell threatened with the guillotine choke he’s famous for. And yet… and yet it wasn’t enough. Munoz took all three rounds, and took home the decision.

There were some good fights on the card, and at the end of it all, when White was awarding contracts, Munoz was left out in the cold.

But really, like when Kimbo Slice was on TUF, this particular episode was less about who was earning their berth in the Octagon and more about the noteworthy person in the cage. Too bad Newell couldn’t pull it off.

UFC Fight Night 134 Results: Anthony Smith Takes Out Another Legend, Destroying Shogun Rua

Never mind that Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has won his last three fights. He’s been fighting for so long, accomplished so much, and suffered so greatly, that given his mileage, every moment we get with him should be cherished. Because it could be the last one we get.

The main event of UFC Fight Night 134 has Shogun taking on Anthony Smith, a jumped-up former middleweight who, in his light-heavyweight debut, wrecked Rashad Evans. Granted, Evans is old as time, too, but still. A win over a name like that counts for something… and that something is a main event slot opposite a fading Brazilian legend.

They come out doing their respective Muay Thai shuffles, but it doesn’t take long for Smith to plant a front kick right on Shogun’s grill. That’s Shogun’s cue to come forward aggressively – which results in Smith battering him with punches until Shogun literally drops his arms and stands there absorbing punishment. He is out, despite being upright, and the ref jumps in.

Time to give Smith a real test.

Results: Anthony Smith def. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua via TKO (Punches) at 1:29, R1
