The countdown has begun…

After years of waiting, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will finally make its first trip to Milwaukee to close out their busy schedule for the “Harley Davidson Hometown Throwdown,” headlined by a lightweight championship contest between titleholder Benson Henderson and No. 1 contender T.J. Grant.

When and where?

In the UFC 164: “Henderson vs. Grant” main event, which tops off a solid pay-per-view (PPV) fight card from the Bradley Centre in Milwaukee, Wis., on Aug. 31, 2013.

That’s just over two months away!

In the co-main event, former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir will welcome another former UFC champion Josh Barnett back to the world’s premier mixed martial arts (MMA) organization after over ten years in what is a match up between two of the most accomplished heavyweight ground fighters in MMA history.

Good stuff.

A bantamweight bout between Chico ‘King’ Camus (12-4) and ‘Typhoon’ Kyung Ho Kang (11-6) appears to be set for the upcoming UFC 164 event in August.

The bout was identified by MMAjunkie.com on Wednesday night and has yet to be confirmed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

UFC 164: Henderson vs. Grant is expected to take place on August 31, 2013 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The event will see lightweight champ Benson Henderson defend his title versus Canadian fighter TJ Grant.

Camus has gone 1-1 so far inside the Octagon having lost to newcomer Dustin Kimura last Feburary by submission at UFC 156. ‘King’ won his debut by decision after defeating Dustin Pague at UFC 150. That win was his fourth straight victory.

Kang debuted with the UFC last March at the UFC on FUEL TV 8 event versus Alex Caceres. ‘Typhoon’ lost by split decision but the result was changed to a “No Contest” after Caceres tested positive for marijuana. Prior to that match the South Korean fighter had earned three straight victories.

Frank Mir vs Josh Barnett fight set for UFC 164 in Milwaukee

Frankmir_crop_exact

Ask and you shall receive.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight champions, Frank Mir and Josh Barnett, will indeed hook ‘em up at UFC 164, a pay-per-view (PPV) event that takes place at Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wis., on Aug. 31, 2013.

The world’s leading mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion made the announcement this evening via Twitter.com; however, it did not indicate whether or not the anticipated clash would serve as the main event of the evening.

Mir is currently mired in the first-ever back-to-back losing streak of his professional MMA career, dropping a unanimous decision to Daniel Cormier at UFC on FOX 7 last month and getting pounded out by then-champion Junior dos Santos at UFC 146 in May 2012.

It’s not going to get any easier with Barnett, an experienced veteran who no doubt can put Mir’s Brazilian jiujitsu to the test (for better or worse).

Barnett, who recently reached a multi-fight deal to return to the Octagon for the first time since 2002 (more here), most recently made quick work of Nandor Guelmino at Strikeforce: “Marquardt vs. Saffiedine” in Jan. 2013. “Warmaster,” 35, has won nine of his 10 most recent matches, dating back to 2008, with the only blip during that span a unanimous decision loss to the aforementioned Cormier in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix little more than one year ago.

He’s now cleared to try and make good on his promises to “wreck shop” and “smash dudes’ faces.”

UFC 164 currently has several confirmed bouts, including Ben Rothwell vs. Brandon Vera, Erik Koch vs. Dustin Poirier and Clay Guida vs. Chad Mendes. Diego Sanchez is also expected to return to the Octagon against an opponent still to be determined.

Expect more announcements to follow soon with the show now just 12 weeks away.

UFC 164: Chad Mendes vs Clay Guida targeted for Milwaukee event

158383823

Let’s try this again.

If UFC 164 was looking to add more wrestling to its line-up, it just found the perfect match. Last night’s UFC Tonight episode mentioned the upcoming (August 31, 2013) Milwaukee pay-per-view event is targeting a bout between featherweight contenders Chad Mendes and Clay Guida.

Both men were originally scheduled to compete against one another at the recent UFC on Fox 7 show, but an injury to Mendes halted UFC’s big plans. Mendes instead faced Darren Elkins, knocking him out in the first round.

Mendes (14-1) has knocked out his last 3 opponents (Cody McKenzie and Yaotzin Meza to go along with Elkins) in a combined 3:34. The featherweight contender’s only defeat was a KO loss to Jose Aldo at UFC 142, and he’s obviously been on a tear since then. Before the McKenzie win, Mendes hadn’t won by KO or TKO since stopping Steven Siler on a Tachi Palace Fights show in 2009. Clay Guida has never been knocked out or even stopped by cuts, but the two times Guida was finished in the UFC came by submission after he was badly hurt by strikes.

Guida (30-13) pulled out of the original Mendes matchup with an injury. “The Carpenter”, who has been involved in several memorable wars at 155 lbs, has come under scrutiny recently by fans and Dana White for his poor, lackluster fights against Hatsu Hioki and Gray Maynard. The fight with Maynard hit a low point when Guida was warned for timidity after “fighting from a distance” was re-defined as “the parking lot”. Guida lost the Maynard bout but did win a somewhat controversial split decision over Hioki in his FW debut.
