UFC veteran Martin Kampmann officially retires from MMA: ‘I’ve known for a while’

Martin Kampmann has officially announced his retirement from the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA).

“The Hitman” revealed his decision to walk away from combat sports during a recent interview with UFC.com, admitting that he doesn’t know why it took him so long make his plans public, despite knowing for a while.

“I’ve known for a while,” the longtime middleweight and welterweight contender admitted. “I just haven’t really made it official. I’m not sure why.”

As far as making a comeback, Martin says that is the last thing on his mind, as he doesn’t ever seem himself fighting professionally again.

“You never know,” he chuckled when asked about that little voice. “But I’ve known for a while that I’m not going to be fighting anymore. Sometimes it’s tough to make it official.”

Beginning his professional MMA career in 2003, the Danish fighter competed inside the Octagon for the last nine years, racking up a respectable 11-6 record inside the eight-sided cage.

And though he ended his career on a two-fight skid to former welterweight champions Carlos Condit and Johny Hendricks, “The Hitman” was known as a fighter who always brought it.

“I had ups and downs, had some great wins and also had some tough losses, but that’s the name of the game,” he said. “It’s a volatile game. You can have big up swings and also tough losses. But every fight, I always came to fight and I tried to finish the fights. I’ve never been one of the guys that just tried to squeak out a boring win. I went in there to fight.”

“Sometimes that can bite you in the ass too, if you come in with a good game plan but then take a punch and you get too emotional and you want to fight. But I definitely had that desire inside to put on a fight, and I think that showed in my fights,” said Martin.

After a stint as striking coach for Urijah Faber’s Team Alpha Male in Sacramento, California, Martin decided to head back home to Las Vegas, Nevada with his ever-growing family which just welcomed a baby girl.

Still, Kampmann says he will always be involved in the sport he loves in one way or another.

“I’m sure I’ll still be involved in MMA,” he said. “It will probably be more from a hobby perspective, whereas before, I was doing full-time fighting and full-time coaching. But I still have gyms that I work with and that I help. I coach, I do seminars, and I work a lot with my affiliate gyms and make sure that they’re getting better in their MMA development. So I’ll be involved in MMA, but now I’m really busy with other things,” he concluded.

What’s your fondest memory of “The Hitman” inside the Octagon?
