Artem Lobov To Face Michael Johnson At UFC Moncton

Tukhugov Out, Johnson In Against Artem Lobov At UFC Moncton

Khabib Nurmagomedov made headlines when he declared he’d quit the UFC if they fired his teammate Zubaira Tukhugov for punching Conor McGregor during the UFC 229 brawl. There’s been no announcement regarding Tukhugov’s fate from the UFC or the Nevada State Athletic Commission, but he has been officially taken off the upcoming October 27th UFC Moncton card against McGregor teammate Artem Lobov.

The fight was originally set as a grudge match, as Tukhugov was part of the posse that Khabib surrounded Lobov with leading up to UFC 223 — the incident that led to McGregor jumping on a private jet to New York with 20 teammates and throwing a dolly at a bus. Lobov even went so far as to beg the UFC to keep Tukhugov on the card, saying they shouldn’t let him ‘escape his punishment.’

Now Artem faces an arguably much tougher challenge with Tukhugov’s replacement: Michael Johnson. The match up was announced by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani on Sunday night.

Johnson holds wins over some impressive names like Tony Ferguson, Edson Barboza, and Dustin Poirier. But the TUF veteran has struggled to stay in the win column against the top names in the division, going 2-3 over the past two years with losses to Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje, and Darren Elkins. That last fight against Elkins was in his featherweight debut. In August, Johnson returned and notched his first win at 145 pounds against Andre Fili in a hard fought split decision.

Lobov is on a two fight losing streak with defeats to Cub Swanson and Andre Fili, but hasn’t made it into hte cage since October of 2017. A fight against Alex “Bruce Leeroy” Caceres at UFC 223 was cancelled due to his presence at Conor McGregor’s bus attack, and now his fight with Tukhugov has been switched with weeks to go due to a similar but more serious violation on Tukhugov’s part.

Lobov and Johnson will fight in the co-main of the event headlined by light heavyweight contenders Volkan Oezdemir vs. Anthony Smith.

Conor BFF Artem Lobov Predicts McGregor’s Future

McGregor training partner and buddy Artem Lobov dishes on what’s next for his superstar pal.

UFC 223 is going to be a big day for the sport of MMA. Not just because there’ll be two titles going down on the April 7th card from Brooklyn, New York, but because it also marks the return of Artem “The Hammer” Lobov!

Lobov has become a bit of a cult sensation amongst followers of the sport due to his close friendship to Conor McGregor, and the featherweight fighter will be taking on Alex Caceres on the undercard of 223, which is headlined by a fight between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov for McGregor’s lightweight belt. So of course when people talked to Lobov about his fight, they also talked about McGregor and whether he’d be attending the event.

“It’s a little bit to soon to say now whether he’ll be there or not,” Lobov told the SevereMMA podcast (via BJPenn.com). “I of course always love seeing him at my fights. It means a lot to me when he is there and I know it means a lot to him to support me, and if he is able to be there, he will be there.”

Lobov also said McGregor was deep in negotiations with the UFC for a return fight and that the most likely opponent was the winner of Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov.

“Yeah, I think he will fight the winner of this fight,” Lobov said. “The winner of that fight will be the true, true challenger and he will fight Conor for the belt … Like I said, he’s the champion. So, you know, there will be a clear challenger decided April 7th and that’s who Conor is going to fight. That’s the way I see it.”

The UFC seems to already be setting up for a potential McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov showdown in Russia, with rumors swirling that the Olympic Stadium in Moscow has been reserved for a September date. That would also line up with the timeline UFC president Dana White said McGregor’s camp gave him for a return, the timeline that prompted him to set up April’s Tony vs. Khabib fight for McGregor’s soon-to-be stripped lightweight title.

Of course, who knows what’s ever going to shake out properly with the UFC. This is the fourth time Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov has been booked, and what if Ferguson wins? Will McGregor still be as interested in the fight or will he turn to Nate Diaz or Floyd Mayweather instead? There’s a lot of moving parts, but the biggest gear gets in motion at UFC 223 on April 7th.

He isn’t a bad fighter at all – in fact, he’s got the skills to beat up many fighters on the feet. Plus, he’s cocky and entertaining when he fights with his hands down, hurling taunts. But the most notable thing about Artem Lobov isn’t anything he brings into the cage, it’s the fact that […]

Artem Lobov ready to ‘box the ears’ off Paulie Malignaggi for whining about Conor McGregor knockdown

It’s too bad “The Money Fight” undercard is already complete (see it here), because Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight slugger Artem Lobov was ready to get in on the action.

Against none other than Paulie Malignaggi.

That’s because the “Notorious” training partner wants to teach the former IBF junior welterweight champion a lesson in humility, after Malignaggi whined about the Conor McGregor knockdown that went viral on social media.

Watch it again here.

“I think he’s an emotional mess and he doesn’t know how to control it,” Lobov told MMA Fighting. “He saw me calling him a diva and he saw Tiernan (Bradley) doing the interviews and he just couldn’t take it. If he wants to fight, I’m down to fight. I’ll box the ears off him, no problem.”

Lobov (13-13-1, 1 NC) was outboxed by Cub Swanson at UFC Fight Night 108 back in April.

Malignaggi was brought in to help McGregor train for his upcoming Floyd Mayweather fight, which takes place a week from Saturday night (Aug. 26, 2017) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
