Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov Set for UFC 229

It’s official! Former featherweight and lightweight champ (and part-time boxing enthusiast) Conor McGregor will face current lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.

Now we’ll get to see if all that malarky with the Irishman smashing a bus window with a dolly equals hype for the inevitable pairing of him and the Dagestani.

We’ll also get to see if McGregor can stop Nurmagomedov’s wrestling… or, more accurately, catch Nurmagomedov on the chin while moving backwards. (Spoiler alert: McGregor totally can).

Here’s the official release:

The biggest fight of 2018 will take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, October 6, as “The Notorious” Conor McGregor returns in an attempt to retake the UFC lightweight title from the hands of unbeaten champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 229.

The bout, which was announced Friday in Los Angeles, will air live on Pay-Per-View

At 26-0, Russia’s Nurmagomedov has been untouchable as a pro, and his recent wins over Michael Johnson, Edson Barboza and Al Iaquinta have only strengthened his place as one of the greatest lightweights ever. But Ireland’s McGregor, the first man to hold two UFC titles simultaneously, has made a career of achieving what some say is impossible, and this fall, he plans on putting a “1” in Nurmagomedov’s loss column while taking back the crown he never lost in the Octagon.

Khabib Betting Favorite Over McGregor For UFC 229 Title Fight

The mixed martial arts (MMA) gods delivered us a massive title fight between UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor. Now it is time to enjoy the ride and soak of the fun before the two stars collide at UFC 229 on Oct. 6 in Las Vegas.

Just hours after the fight was announced at the UFC 25th anniversary press conference in Los Angeles, Calif., oddsmakers were already on the prowl. While the odds are due to change in the coming two months, early numbers show Nurmagomedov as the betting favorite.

According to our buddies over at Bovada, “The Eagle” is currently a -175 favorite to take care of McGregor in his return to the Octagon. On the other side, McGregor comes in as a +145 underdog, which is understandable given his two-year absence from the sport.

While these odds make sense right now, McGregor tends to swing the numbers his way as the fight draws closer. The Irishman’s mind games sometimes play a factor in the way his opponents enter a bout, so it will be interesting to see how Khabib stomachs the verbal lashing McGregor is about to unleash.

In McGregor’s case, he’s about to face the worst possible matchup on the 155-pound roster. If there’s anything McGregor is less qualified to do it’s fighting off his back. Khabib is likely to enforce that reality at UFC 229 so “Notorious” better come with a new bag of tricks. After all, Khabib is planning on taking McGregor down 100 times.

Of course, McGregor could always flip the script and stun Khabib early with a left hand to recapture the UFC lightweight title.

Everything is a possibility, folks. But for now, Khabib is the betting favorite to retain his lightweight belt at UFC 229.

Conor McGregor Already Training Hard for That Khabib Fight

Last week, troubled Irish lad Conor McGregor accepted a plea deal with the authorities in New York, putting his transgressions against a bus behind him.

Now he’s in the midst of training hard for the next big thing on his plate: a match-up against UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov. And that training has apparently taken the form of working out in Central Park.

Look, it’s not really that special what McGregor is doing. You can’t walk 50 feet in that park without running across someone shadowboxing, practicing katas… heck, there are even occasional no-holds-barred fights in there.

But anyway, it’s Conor, so that warrants TMZ Sports capturing it on video.

Khabib Nurmagomedov Ready to Make That Conor McGregor Money

Now that Conor McGregor is free to physically assault people via legal means (i.e., in the cage) and no longer concerned with going to jail for it, a world of opportunities has opened up.

But no greater portal to combat – and monster pay-per-view dollars – exists than the focus of the Irishman’s original ire on that fateful day in Brooklyn back in April. That’s right, I’m talking about the lightweight champ, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

If you’ll recall, McGregor assaulted that bus because Nurmagomedov was on it. And all that unwanted (or was it actually wanted) legal attention has made a match-up between the Irishman and the Dagestani one heck of a tantalizing prospect.

So now McGregor is free of legal entanglements, and Nurmagomedov is ready to face him and make that gigantic chunk of change that comes with pay-per-view percentage points. Here’s Nurmagomedov’s statement… although it’s worth noting that Nurmagomedov doesn’t exactly make it clear that he wants McGregor solely in the Octagon. He might still be willing to face McGregor in a park in Brighton Beach at midnight.
