Video: O’Malley Fake Sparks Joint During UFC On FOX 29 Broadcast

Rising UFC bantamweight prospect Sean O’Malley went full Cheech last night (Sat., April 14, 2018) during the FOX broadcast for UFC on FOX 29 from Glendale, Arizona, when he acted like he was sparking up a joint on live television (seen above).

A little awkward for UFC women’s flyweight contender Mackenzie Dern, who was siting right beside “Sugar,” but a moment most fight fans took in with a smile.

O’Malley, 23, is one of UFC’s most promising young athletes, although he’s not really a standard role model like other fighters that would be featured at the forefront of a mixed martial arts (MMA) broadcast. As a fighter who utilizes a chunk of his free time to enjoy the greener side of things, O’Malley took time during his short TV spot to pull out a rolled joint and pretend to light it.

Jealous?

Whether or not you’re someone who partakes in that sort of thing, you have to applaud the kid’s effort. After all, this isn’t new to UFC or the many fans who follow O’Malley. Ever since “Sugar” released footage of a side-by-side smoke session with rap icon Snoop Dogg, the talented bantamweight has publicly revealed marijuana-infused after parties and plans to roll out his own customized weed strain.

Not too shabby, especially for a young fighter with only two Octagon appearances under his belt (both victories).

O’Malley is a unique character to say the least and a fighter UFC is certainly going to lean on to attack a specific demographic moving forward. Not for nothing, but this guy has already paved the way for the second generation of UFC weed smokers.

The Weekly Grind: Nick Diaz smokes joint before triathlon, Tyron Woodley gets lost in the rainforest

The life of a professional fighter isn’t all glitz and glamour.

As if getting punched, kicked, kneed, choked and twisted into a pretzel on a regular basis isn’t enough, fighters attract a general wackiness that makes their lives, well…interesting.

To commemorate these day-to-day hardships, slip-ups, pranks, and more, we bring you, “The Weekly Grind.”

Cung Le retires from MMA, UFC’s Dana White, Lorenzo Fertitta issue joint statement

No hard feelings!

Cung Le, 42, has called it a mixed martial arts (MMA) career after nearly nine years in the sport and 12 professional matches.

He issued the following statement:

“After several months of thought and discussion with my wife and family we realize our future includes many things, but active competition in mixed martial arts is no longer one of them therefore I am officially announcing my retirement from active competition.”

Le, who defeated Frank Shamrock in March 2008 to become the Strikeforce Middleweight champion, reportedly did not close the door on resuming his kickboxing career at a later date. The Vietnamese-born Sanshou specialist was undefeated (17-0) prior to making his transition to MMA in 2006.

It’s no surprise that Le soured on MMA. He requested to be released by UFC, where he compiled an even record (2-2) with wins over Rich Franklin and Patrick Cote, after the promotion screwed up his drug testHe initially just wanted an apology, but as time passed he clearly wanted more.

In fact, Le is the most notable name in a class-action antitrust lawsuit that was filed against UFC in Dec. 2014. One that UFC plans to “vigorously defend” with its “powerhouse” legal team.

Regardless, UFC execs Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White showered Le with praise when news broke that he would step away from the sport.

From UFC.com:

Said UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, “Cung Le was a great ambassador of the sport for us in Asia and one of the most exciting middleweights to step foot in the Octagon. We wish him well in his retirement and future endeavors.”

“Cung Le was awesome and would take any fight,” UFC President Dana White added. “He was such a huge piece of the success of The Ultimate Fighter China. I loved working with him and wish him well in the future.”

Kill ‘em with kindness!

Le retires with a modest, but impressive MMA record (9-3). Especially when you consider that he more or less did it as a hobby later in his career, focusing most of his time and energy trying to become an action movie star rather than inside a sweaty gym training for fights.

Onward.

Will Chope, ex-wife issue joint statement in response to UFC release, past domestic violence incidents

Former UFC featherweight Will Chope is responding to questions and concerns raised from a Bleacher Report articleuncovering Chope had been given a Bad Conduct Discharge and sentenced to five months imprisonment from the Air Force in 2011. The report and facts contained therein eventually caused the UFC to cut Chope from the organization the day of his last-scheduled fight opposite Diego Brandao at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Henderson 2.

Chope, who was paid his show money for the bout despite not competing, created the video above with his ex-wife, who is identified here as Ashleigh.

The two answer a number of common questions stemming both from Chope’s dismissal from the UFC and Air Force as well as the state of their current…
