Jason Knight embracing Diaz brothers comparison heading into UFC Fight Night 123

Rising UFC featherweight contender Jason Knight is hoping to put a loss to Ricardo Lamas behind him tomorrow night (Sat., Dec. 9, 2017) at UFC Fight Night 123 live on FOX Sports 1 from inside Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., when he takes on Mexican finisher Gabriel Benitez in the co-main event.

Knight, who lost to Lamas after filling in for an injured Chan Sung Jung at UFC 214 this past July, has become one of the more entertaining fighters to watch. His brawling tendencies and gritty attitude have led to comparisons to Nick and Nate Diaz, which in turn has left Knight with a rather catchy moniker.

“I like it,” Knight said about his “Hick Diaz” nickname in a recent interview with UFC.com.

“Some people might get offended if you call them a ‘hick’ or something like that but man, I embrace that. I was born in the South, raised up as country as can be and it doesn’t really bother me. Every chance I get I’m out there mud riding on my four-wheeler or out in the woods hunting, so it really doesn’t bother me none.”

While Knight has a long way to go before stacking his resume up against that of the Diaz brothers, two Performance of the Night awards over his last three Octagon appearances leads us to believe the Mississippi native is already on his way.

“The Diaz Brothers have always been some of my favorite fighters, guys I looked up to,” Knight revealed. “They don’t give a damn what you think about them. They’re going to go out there and fight their asses off and win, lose or draw, they’re going to talk sh*t and have a blast while they’re doing it.

“That’s the way that I am and that’s the way I like to be too. If you’re going to beat me in a fight, I bet you can’t beat me in a sh*t-talking match while we’re fighting; that’s kind of how I am. They’re my kind of people and it doesn’t bother me one bit to get compared to them.”

Knight is not exaggerating. The 25-year-old featherweight contender has been known to chirp quite heavily at opponents mid-fight, whether he was winning or not. Things shouldn’t change for “Hick Diaz” when he gets his hands on Benitez tomorrow night in Fresno.

“I’ve worked my ass off for this fight and I’m ready to go,” Knight said. “I’m gonna show the fans why I deserve to be in the Top 15 and show Sean Shelby why my next fight should be against one of those guys that’s on up the ladder instead of someone that’s way, way out of the rankings.

“They might have given me this fight as a comeback fight – and that’s no disrespect to Gabriel Benitez, who I know is going to be a very tough fight – but I don’t want to be fighting guys out of the Top 15 now. I want to fight whoever gets me closer to the title. I’m gonna go out here and fight my heart out so I can get closer to that belt.”

UFC Fight Night 123 will be headlined by a featherweight matchup pitting veteran Cub Swanson against undefeated contender Brian Ortega.

MMAmania.com will deliver LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the entire UFC Fight Night 123 fight card, starting with the UFC Fight Pass “Prelims” matches online at 6:30 p.m. ET, followed by the FOX Sports 1 “Prelims” bouts at 8 p.m. ET, before the main card start time at 10 p.m. ET, also on FOX Sports 1.

Midnight Mania! Jason David Frank recounts almost getting into brawl with Jean Claude Van Damme

Bringing you weird and wild stuff from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Jean Claude Van Damme and Jason David Frank (the Green Power Ranger and erstwhile MMA fighter) nearly got into a brawl at La Mole Comic Con recently in Mexico, with Jason going so far as to clinch the revered martial artist up against the wall.

It isn’t the first time the two have had beef. They rubbed each other the wrong way from the first time they met; in 2010, Frank heard Van Damme was looking for a real fight, and issued a public challenge. Nothing ever came of it, until this past Saturday, when they met at a Comic Con event they both were booked for in Mexico. Flo Combat’s Damon Martin interviewed Frank to explain:

“The promoter contacted me and asked if Jean Claude Van Damme could borrow my green room and share the room,” Frank told FloCombat in an exclusive interview. “The first thing in my head was yeah, he’s a big star, he doesn’t need to ask. I don’t hold a grudge. So I said yeah, I’ll share it no big deal.

“I never expected us to talk about old times or anything because it was so long ago and there was no response [about the fight]. I didn’t even think he knew about it. So they asked me to use the room and no big deal.”

As Frank told it, Van Damme and his security had completely claimed the room when he arrived. Instead of making a big deal out of it, he went to another room to wait for Van Damme to leave. Someone approached him to relay a request from Van Damme to take a photo together. But when he arrived in the room, it was clear Van Damme wasn’t there for a freindly photograph.

“All of his crew comes out and everybody has their cameras out and he has this professional camera, I’m not sure if he’s shooting a reality show or what, but all the cameras are on and he comes out of the room and straight up to me and he goes ‘hey you like writing articles about people, you want to beat my ass?” Frank said recounting the altercation. “You gonna apologize for that?’ and I said nope. He goes ‘you think you can still beat my ass?’ and I said yeah.

“He said ‘OK let’s do it right now’. I mean I thought it was all a joke but his security was all filming this and I heard them talking in the back and it was clear that he was trying to punk me. Either make me look bad or throw a punch first.”

At this point Van Damme put down his stuff, and Frank took off his necklace and watch. That’s when it got physical.

“I clinched him up and pushed him back, not in a violent way, in a respectful way that if you want to do this, let’s do this,” Frank said. “The whole time everybody is filming me and no security people are coming but everybody in his entourage is filming. So I clinched up with him and put him against the wall and he’s talking and he froze up and I raised my knee and said ‘do you want to this?’ and he doesn’t do anything so I let go.

“I backed away and he starts saying ‘well be careful what you say, you never know what I’m gonna do’. So that’s when it escalated and his security guy came in and broke it up.”

Frank said that once he let go of the clinch, and security arrived, Van Damme got belligerent again. In the video, you can hear Frank reference Chuck Zito, who infamously knocked out Van Damme with a two-piece combination at a topless bar in the 1990s.

“Security came and broke it up and that’s when he starts saying ‘f*ck you’ and I told him come on. Why don’t you come in the cage or the ring? Why are you doing this at Comic Con?” Frank said. “And then his security is trying to get my phone to take away the footage.

“My point is if he has all the footage and it’s gonna make him look really bad. It doesn’t belong at Comic Con. It belongs in a ring or a cage. I’m not bitter but he’s acting childish.”

He made it clear that, while he was not about to be punked in front of cameras, he didn’t start a fight. He clinched up with Van Damme because he thought a fight was imminent, but once he grabbed the movie star behind the neck, Van Damme didn’t do anything.

“I was on edge thinking he’s going to fight right now. He was trying to punk me so I got ready,” Frank said. “I wasn’t the aggressor but he showed no response. If somebody grabbed me behind the neck, I’d knock them out. I did that and he didn’t do anything. Security didn’t break it up. He’s got his whole entourage around us and they looked hungry. But when I threw that knee that didn’t even touch him and he cowered up.

“When I let him go, he starts popping off and then when security got all around him he starts popping off even more. I just told him don’t punk me. He was trying to punk me and bully me and I don’t do that.”

“I’m not going to get punked like that and I think he was shocked that I stood up to him,” Frank said. “I was never bitter and I’m still not bitter but I’m a fighter.”

Frank was clear in the interview and on Instagram afterwards that he doesn’t hold a grudge against Van Damme and still enjoys his movies, especially Bloodsport.

Insomnia

Georges St. Pierre said that Saturday was the best night of his career. He should be happy- it was an incredible night for him and for everyone who tuned it to watch UFC 217.

Even Justin Trudeau, Canada’s Prime Minister, congratulated St. Pierre.

GSP’s win was very much unlike his previous run. This was his first knockdown-to finish moment in more than a decade. It was a downright heroic finish.

Rose Namajunas is absolutely adorable as well as terrifying. She’s got a UFC belt AND ripe tomatoes, so she’s pretty happy.

I hadn’t realized Rose sparred with Valentina Shevchenko (who beat Jedrzejczyk three times in Muay Thai competition a long time ago) to prepare for this title bout.

And thanks also to these wonderful ladies @bulletvalentina @antonina_muaythai you guys are the best! ❤️

Rose cold-blooded stare was the perfect foil to Joanna’s mind games:

Pretty much:

It WAS the ultimate dudebro fight.

Dillashaw’s famous sparring partner congratulated him on the win:

I am sure Cody will be back, and I would be surprised at anything but a trilogy between him and TJ Dillashaw- even if he insists the only person that beats him is himself.

Daniel Cormier sums up the reactions of us all:

Demetrious Johnson wants to know who is taller:

Nice rear-naked choke from A.J. Green:

My reaction was the same as Jessica Eye’s. This can’t be real news from Paige VanZant. I know the UFC is all money fights now, but there have to be limits. She’s coming off a loss to Michelle Waterson.

Volkan and DC spent some time talking trash to each other ahead of their planned clash next year:

This was indeed a strange-looking KO by OSP

Nice art from Boss Logic:

Brunson called out Michael Bisping since Rockhold keeps turning him down:

From the weekend:

I’m not sure what was going on here, and as such I can’t give my approval to this behavior.

Midnight Mania! UFC fighter Rony Jason punches downed woman at party in Brazil

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Add Rony Jason to the long list of current and former UFC fighters who have a record of violence against women. As reported by BloodyElbow.com, he can be seen in the above video punching a grounded woman and shouting down at her after others pull him off her.

Jason has an explosive temper; after his loss to Jeremy Stephens, he put his fist through a wall and had to get stitches at the hospital. Assaulting a grounded woman is obviously not justifiable under any circumstances, and being a professional fighter only makes it worse.

Rony Jason has gone 0-3 in his latest UFC run, with one no contest. It is not known if he is even still under contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. They have not issued a statement as yet on his behavior.
