UFC on FOX 23 fight card: Raphael Assuncao vs Aljamain Sterling Bantamweight battle re-booked for Jan. 28 in Denver

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has re-booked the Bantamweight battle between top-ranked contenders Raphael Assuncao (No. 3) and Aljamain Sterling (No. 8) to take place at UFC on FOX 23 in Denver, Colo., on Jan. 28, 2016, according to Newsday.com.

The 135-pound scrap was supposed to actually take place at UFC Fight Night 102 this weekend (Fri., Dec. 9, 2016) before Sterling had to withdraw from the Fight Pass-only event with an injury.

Sterling (12-1) is looking to gain back ground in the Bantamweight Top 10 after a split decision loss to Bryan Caraway at UFC Fight Night 88 back in May. Getting struck by “Kid Lightning” snapped a 12-fight mixed martial arts (MMA) win streak and put “Funk Master” in a divisional holding pattern.

That could all soon change a “Mile High.”

Indeed, it will all depend on his performance against Assuncao (23-5). The Brazilian is also coming off a recent loss, ending a run of seven consecutive wins, thanks to a unanimous decision defeat to ex-champion T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 200.

It’s a meaningful divisional match up that will inch the winner closer to a potential title shot sometime in 2017.

UFC on FOX 23 features a possible No. 1 women’s Bantamweight contender eliminator match between top-ranked contenders Valentina Shevchenko (No. 2) and Julianna Pena (No. 3) in the main event of the evening. In addition, a bang fest between Hector Lombard and Brad Tavares, as well as a Lightweight showdown between J.C. Cottrell and Jason Gonzalez, are currently planned to take place inside Pepsi Center.

Tito Ortiz says Bellator 170 bout with Chael Sonnen on Jan. 21 will be his ‘final fight’

When Tito Ortiz takes on Chael Sonnen at Bellator 170 on Jan. 21 from inside The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., it will be a meeting between two of the best trash talkers in mixed martial arts (MMA) history. It will also be the last time MMA fans will be able to see “The Huntington Beach Bad Bay” in action, according to a recent social media submission by the man himself.

If Bellator 170 will in fact be Ortiz’s swan song, it’s one hell of a way to go out. Ortiz vs. Sonnen is building up to be the biggest fight in Bellator MMA history and a main event outside of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) competition that will have the combat world buzzing.

Ortiz, 41, has a current professional record of 18-12-1, which includes legendary feuds with former UFC staples Chuck Liddell and Ken Shamrock. While Sonnen is a shell of his former self at the age of 39, he’s a nice addition to the collection of opponents Ortiz has verbally battled with.

Whether or not UFC actually rescheduled UFC 208 to make room for Ortiz’s final performance, it’s nice to know that one of the more infamous characters in MMA history will have the entire night to himself, while Sonnen has another opportunity to play “The Bad Guy.”

Sam Alvey vs. Nate Marquardt scheduled for UFC on FOX 23 on Jan. 28

The always smiley Sam Alvey will make his return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Octagon early next year, as the middleweight knockout artist is expected to take on veteran Nate Marquardt at UFC on FOX 23 on Jan. 28 from the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo., per FloCombat.

Alvey, 30, has fought four times in 2016, securing a 3-1 record with two memorable finishes. After winning a unanimous decision over Alex Nicholson back at UFC Fight Night 98, Alvey extended his current win streak to three. He’s one of the more game brawlers in the middleweight division today and a guy who can use a victory over Marquardt to catapult himself into the top 15.

Marquardt, 37, recently got back into the middleweight win column with a head kick knockout of Tamdan McCrory back at UFC Fight Night 96. The former title challenger has produced a 3-3 clip since dropping back down to 185 pounds in 2014, but will look to start 2017 off with a bang against Alvey.

UFC on FOX 23 does not currently have a main event.
