Jimi Manuwa Injured, Out Of Cursed UFC Sao Paulo Main Event

With both original headliners out, Thiago Santos will now face Eryk Anders on September 22nd in Brazil.

UFC Fight Night 137 has seen a lot of changes over the months, but none quite as unfortunate as this latest switch up just a week before the event: headliner Jimi Manuwa is out of his fight with Thiago Santos for as of yet undisclosed reasons. According to MMA Junkie, Eryk Anders has been tapped as a late replacement.

Set to go down September 22nd from the Ginasio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the card was originally headlined by Jimi Manuwa vs. Glover Teixeira. But because the MMA Gods enjoy our pain, Teixeira pulled out in August with an injury, replaced by Santos. And now the other half of the original matchup is out as well.

Other scratches for the card include Neil Magny, Elias Theodorou, Antonio Carlos Junior, Mark Godbeer, Tonya Evinger, and Ketlen Vieira.

Anders is currently 11-1 and coming off a third round headkick knockout of Tim Williams in August. This will actually be the second time he’s headlined in Brazil. He faced Lyoto Machida earlier this year, losing a controversial split decision that many felt should have gone his way. The possibility of more hometown cooking wasn’t enough to stop the former Alabama Crimson Tide player from jumping at the opportunity to step in, though.

Even with all the changes, UFC Sao Paulo is still looking pretty good. Here’s the lineup as it stands now, before weigh-in debacles inevitably kill another match or two.

FOX Sports 1 Main Card – 10:30 PM EST

  • Thiago Santos vs. Eryk Anders
  • Alex Oliveira vs. Carlo Pedersoli
  • Sam Alvey vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
  • Renan Barao vs. Andre Ewell
  • Randa Markos vs. Marina Rodriguez

FOX Sports 2 Prelims – 8:00 PM EST

  • Christos Giagos vs. Charles Oliveira
  • Evan Dunham vs. Francisco Trinaldo
  • Luis Henrique vs. Ryan Spann
  • Augusto Sakai vs. Chase Sherman

UFC Fight Pass Prelims – 6:45 p.m. ET

  • Sergio Moraes vs. Ben Saunders
  • Marya Bueno Silva vs. Gillian Robertson
  • Thales Leites vs. Hector Lombard
  • Belal Muhammad vs. Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos
  • Alex Chambers vs. Livia Renata Souza

Injured Johnson Provides Knee, Foot Update

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson, finally got some good news after a disappointing weekend in Los Angeles, one that saw “Mighty Mouse” get trapped by division rival Henry Cejudo.

And cough up his crown in the process.

Johnson believed he suffered a broken foot while chasing “The Messenger” but X-rays show the bones are still intact. As far as the possible tear in his knee, the 125-pound dynamo says those results are still pending.

“I got X-rays on my foot, everything seems to be fine,” Johnson told his Instagram followers. “If the pain is still there, if the swelling is still there after 10 days, I’ll have another MRI to make sure nothing’s wrong with it. I got an MRI on my knee, no results yet, takes about two days.”

Either way, I would not expect Johnson back in action before 2019.

When he does return, it would not surprise me to hear UFC has ordered an immediate rematch. While Cejudo has been chirping about super fights opposite bantamweight kingpin TJ Dillashaw, “The Messenger” won a five-round split decision (recap) and hasn’t made a single title defense.

I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Greg Hardy Injured in Football Game, UFC Career on Hold

NFL player and accused domestic abuser Greg Hardy made a splash in the Octagon recently when he scored a knockout on “Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series”. He earned a UFC contract, but also earned a good bit of uproar because he once wound up in cuffs for beating his woman, and why would the UFC even hire this guy?

Well, karma stepped in and meted out some justice.

Despite being the proud owner of a UFC contract, Hardy still plays football, albeit arena football. And young homie injured his knee.

Here’s ESPN:

Former NFL player turned MMA fighter Greg Hardy suffered a knee injury in an arena football game Saturday night.

Hardy, who also currently stars for the Richmond Roughriders of the American Arena League, was hurt in the first quarter of the Roughriders’ 57-43 win over the Carolina Energy. Hardy is expected to get the knee examined by doctors in the coming days, sources told ESPN. The severity of the injury is unclear at this time.

The timing is unfortunate for Hardy, who won his professional mixed martial arts debut four days prior to the football game and was subsequently signed by the UFC. According to sources, Hardy isn’t sure if the knee injury will delay his next fight, which hasn’t been signed yet.
