Greg Hardy Injured in Football Game, UFC Career on Hold

NFL player and accused domestic abuser Greg Hardy made a splash in the Octagon recently when he scored a knockout on “Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series”. He earned a UFC contract, but also earned a good bit of uproar because he once wound up in cuffs for beating his woman, and why would the UFC even hire this guy?

Well, karma stepped in and meted out some justice.

Despite being the proud owner of a UFC contract, Hardy still plays football, albeit arena football. And young homie injured his knee.

Here’s ESPN:

Former NFL player turned MMA fighter Greg Hardy suffered a knee injury in an arena football game Saturday night.

Hardy, who also currently stars for the Richmond Roughriders of the American Arena League, was hurt in the first quarter of the Roughriders’ 57-43 win over the Carolina Energy. Hardy is expected to get the knee examined by doctors in the coming days, sources told ESPN. The severity of the injury is unclear at this time.

The timing is unfortunate for Hardy, who won his professional mixed martial arts debut four days prior to the football game and was subsequently signed by the UFC. According to sources, Hardy isn’t sure if the knee injury will delay his next fight, which hasn’t been signed yet.

*Cue sad trombone music*

Brad Tavares Injured, Out Of TUF 27 Finale Main Event

Less than one month away from the scheduled Finale to The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 27, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight Brad Tavares has suffered a broken foot and will not be able to compete against the up-and-coming Israel Adesanya. Per UFC honcho Dana White’s conversation with TMZ Sports, Brazilian Thiago Santos has verbally agreed to take the fight, but the company is still unsure about who the opponent should be for the 13-0 hot prospect.

Brad Tavares – I don’t think anybody knows this yet – but Brad Tavares just this morning broke his foot. He’s outta that fight right now with Israel, so we’re looking to put somebody new in with this kid. And, uh… I’m excited about him.

I don’t know. Thiago Santos said he will accept the fight. But, uh, I’m looking. I’m still looking and trying to figure this thing out. Injuries are killing me, man!

Santos would be a lower-ranked opponent than Tavares (8 versus 12) and would, in theory, be an easier fight for the highly touted New Zealander. Tavares is riding a four-fight win streak, while Santos had his own four-fight win streak stopped by the growing striking prowess of David Branch six weeks ago as he fell victim to a massive overhand right.

It remains to be seen who the UFC will put in to attempt to derail the Adesanya hype train, but with the fight a mere 29 days away, expect an announcement soon.

This leaves the card with only four official fights still on it. We know the winners of the reality shows will face off, but that still only makes five bouts: Alessio Di Chirico vs. Julian Marquez, Roxanne Modafferi vs. Barb Honchak, Montana De La Rosa vs. Rachael Ostovich and Matt Bessette vs. Steven Peterson.

Tony Ferguson Injured, Max Holloway In Versus Khabib Nurmagomedov

Yet again, the match-up between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov is off.

Replacing Ferguson in the main event of UFC 223 will be featherweight champ Max Holloway. The winner of the Holloway versus Nurmagomedov bout will be the undisputed lightweight king.

I wish this were an April Fools joke, but it’s not. Apparently, Ferguson injured his knee in training. Also apparent is that Conor McGregor will finally be stripped of his title…

…And you can bet that if Holloway becomes the two-division featherweight/lightweight champ, a rematch with McGregor will soon follow.
