Midnight Mania! Khabib Has Worst Possible Advice For Female Fighters

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight …

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was asked if he had advice for female fighters. The Dagestani took his time before giving his response.

Be a fighter inside your home.

The audience erupted into cheers. Khabib continued.

All the time, finish your husband. [more cheers] smash him really bad.

This is far from the first time a male mixed martial arts champion has expressed regressive views regarding the role of women in the sport. George St. Pierre earned the ire of female mixed martial artists a few years ago by expressing his admittedly ‘traditional’ views about women and cage fighting. Khabib’s compatriot Fedor Emelianenko is also on record disapproving of female fighters in mixed martial arts (though, oddly enough, boxing or wrestling are fine).

This also isn’t Khabib’s first brush with controversy. He advised his countrymen in an Instagram post about the immorality of rap music, he has endorsed criminal Russian oligarchs, and of course he ignited a post-fight brawl with Conor McGregor’s teammates.

UFC PR evidently told MMA media to refrain from any questions about Greg Hardy’s past, and MMA media complied.

No one told the UFC to sign Greg Hardy, who according to evidence and sworn testimony has a record of domestic violence (his conviction was overturned on appeal and expunged after he settled with the victim), and certainly no one told them to book him on the same card as very recent domestic violence survivor Rachael Ostovich.

The UFC will look to move Henry Cejudo vs. TJ Dillashaw to main event their January ESPN card in Brooklyn.

John Lineker shouldn’t be able to beat Dominick Cruz, but his power and aggression means the fight will be Cruz dancing on a knife edge.

We make fun of Tito Ortiz a lot but this is me in front of a camera too:

Midnight Mania! UFC Female Fighter Speaks Out Against Greg Hardy Signing

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

UFC women’s flyweight fighter Jessica-Rose Clark, better known as “Jessie Jess”, is not happy with the UFC’s decision to sign domestic violence offender Greg Hardy. Transcript via MMAJunkie.com:

“I don’t believe people like that change,” the 30-year-old fighter said during an appearance on the “Phonebooth Fighting” podcast.

She has personal experience, unfortunately. Her former fiance Julian Wallace, also a professional MMA fighter, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault, receiving only a 15-month suspended sentence, and was allowed to keep his Australian passport. Wallace reportedly kicked her in the head while wearing boots, then put her in a Muay Thai clinch and elbowed her in the head repeatedly — all because she brought home the wrong noodles. The article describing the attack said she then escaped a chokehold and knocked him out with a headkick of her own before calling the police.

“They gave him his second chance, and I’m a firm believer that someone who is capable of going as far as he went with me – and I know he’s been further with other women before I met him – he’s not going to change,” Clark said. “He can do all the convincing and all the lying in the world, and he can convince you that he’s a really good person. But who he is at his core is someone who’s capable and willing to do stuff like that.”

She says that unfortunately, athletic ability seems to excuse any kind of behavior. Indeed, Dana White claimed that Hardy is a “great guy”, was never convicted (he was; the conviction was later thrown out when the victim didn’t show up to the appeal trial) and Hardy seemed to regard White as an “angel” for giving him a second chance.

“Athletic ability seems to supersede any negative thing you do in your life,” Clark said. “You see it time and time again, like Kobe Bryant. It happens so often, and it blows my mind that that’s where our society is at. That like, ‘Oh, he did all these really terrible things, but he’s an amazing athlete, so (expletive) it, let’s just let him keep going and keep making his millions and keep being on TV.’ There’s no punishment.

“What stops (Hardy) from going and doing it to the next girlfriend? I promise you that wasn’t the first girlfriend that he did that to. But he didn’t get punished for that one, either. He didn’t get punished for the first ones, and he didn’t get punished for that one, and now he’s going to be televised on one of the largest broadcasts in the world, for one of the most popular sports in the world. What’s stopping him from doing it to every girl that comes into contact with him?”

Clark blames an age of social media for overloading people with so much immediate information that no one takes the time to stop and care about this kind of issue.

“In the age of social media, it’s hard for people to care about it, because whether you react negatively or positively to something, now with social media and how quickly people have access to that, you get an immediate feedback,” Clark said. “So it’s like drinking or taking drugs – you say something, you get a reaction straight away, which is what I think people crave. So there’s no need to look into anything further, because you’re getting that quick fix all the time.”

Tatiana Suarez: The Female Khabib?

The Ultimate Fighter 23 winner is quickly gaining a fearsome reputation for Khabib-like dominance.

After a quick and impressive submission win over Alexa Grasso at UFC ‘Chile’, Tatiana Suarez is now 3-0 in the Octagon and 6-0 in MMA … numbers that don’t include her three exhibition wins en route to winning The Ultimate Fighter 23 strawweight tournament. She’s also an Olympic caliber wrestler, and her aggressive top game has some making comparisons to another dominant UFC fighter: lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

In her backstage interview with Laura Sanko, Suarez was happy to be mentioned in the same breath as Khabib and revealed she actually cribbed some of her moves in the fight from him.

“I love that comparison because I’m a huge fan of his,” Suarez said. “I really base a lot of my wrist riding off of him. I do that a lot in practice and actually, that’s what happened, I went for the wrist ride and she turned her back to me and I took her back off of it. So yeah, thank you Khabib for that because I learned from him.”

”I learn from all the fighters,” she continued. “There’s so many amazing fighters. I know a lot of fighters that say ‘I don’t watch fights.’ That’s crazy, because you can learn so much from anybody and grow as a martial artist.”

Suarez’s position in the co-main event shows you that the UFC is serious about pushing her as a force in the strawweight division. We’re looking forward to seeing her grow as a martial artist, especially if she keeps borrowing from some of the best fighters in the game.

Midnight Mania! Female boxer Heather Hardy gets headkicked, nose broken in Bellator MMA bout

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Undefeated as a professional boxer, Heather Hardy was a highly touted prospect coming into tonight’s Bellator 185. She had finished her last opponent via TKO, and seemed to have star potential. However, tonight, she suffered her first defeat in either MMA or boxing at the hands of debut fighter Kristina Williams, who broke Hardy’s nose with a brutal head kick.

The fight was a kicking clinic for Williams. Heather Hardy earns points for being incredibly tough and staying on her feet despite taking shinbone to the noggin. It’s clear Hardy has some things to work on if she’s going to have a successful MMA career, though. The broken nose reminded many of Rory Macdonald’s fights with Stephen Thompson and Robbie Lawler.

Midnight Mania! Female fighter Tara LaRosa joins #MeToo, was forced to undergo pre-fight “breast exam”

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Tara LaRosa, a professional fighter for Invicta FC, joined the #MeToo campaign, where females share stories of sexual assault or harassment to raise awareness as to how common a phenomenon it is. Some estimates report that 1 out of 6 women experience a rape or attempted rape. The rate for sexual violence is much higher than that, though, with some sites reporting that nearly half of all women experience some form of sexual violence in their lives.

Tara’s story is a creepy one: a doctor insisted on giving her a “breast exam” before her Invicta FC 9 bout against Roxanne Modafferi. This isn’t a normal part of pre-fight medicals in any other state. She argued with him for half an hour, and he said if he wasn’t permitted to do the exam, she wouldn’t fight. Erik Magraken, lawyer and the founder of CombatSports.net, did some research, and nothing in the Massachusetts Athletic Commission regulations requires a breast exam. He writes:

While a physician does have broad discretion nowhere is a mandatory breast exam mentioned. The ‘special in-depth‘ exam is only triggered if there are ‘symptoms of ill health or physical impairment‘. It is hard to imagine how, absent compelling circumstances, a breast exam could be part of the pre-fight physical examination.

In other words, there was no justification for this. Given that the doctor insisted he had been doing this for years, the Massachusetts Athletic Commission has some questions to answer.

UFC fighter Roxanne Modafferi confirmed the story:

Artem Lobov, Conor McGregor’s longtime teammate, seems sure that Conor McGregor will fight Tony Ferguson next.

“Now that that’s [Mayweather vs. McGregor's] over, well now he’s back to defending his belt,” Lobov told Bryant. “In my eyes, of course he’s going to fight Tony. Why wouldn’t he fight Tony? His belt is on the line. Some guy has this fake belt around his waist. Conor wants to just take that away by all means.

“So in my eyes, 100 percent he’s going to fight Tony. Who else is he going to fight? Why wouldn’t he fight Tony? Why wouldn’t he defend that belt? That belt means a lot to Conor. He’s dreamed since a very, very long time ago of having that belt, so… it’s going to be damn, damn hard to try and take that belt from him. He’s going to be defending that belt for a long time.”
