Fabricio Werdum vs Alexander Volkov headlines UFC Fight Night 127 in London

Nice to see some local flavor getting that shine.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight titleholder Fabricio Werdum has been tapped to headline the upcoming UFC Fight Night 127 mixed martial arts (MMA) event on UFC Fight Pass, taking place Sat., March 17, 2018 inside O2 Arena in London, England.

That’s where he’ll face streaking heavyweight bruiser Alexander Volkov.

Werdum (23-7-1) is trying to work his way back up to a heavyweight title fight since Stipe Miocic stripped him of the strap back in May 2016. Since then, “Vai Cavalo” has compiled a 3-1 record against ho-hum competition.

Let’s hope he leaves his boomerang at home.

Volkov (29-6) is the winner of five straight, including last September’s technical knockout win over Stefan Struve. Still just 29, “Drago” is 11 years younger than his Brazilian counterpart.

Three of his six losses came under the Bellator MMA banner.

UFC Fight Night 127, which was expected to feature the retirement fight of Michael Bisping, will also showcase the light heavyweight rematch between Jan Blachowicz and Jimi Manuwa, while Kajan Johnson and Rustam Khabilov collide in lightweight action.

Fun!

Fabricio Werdum Ends Wild Week in Sydney With Decision Win at UFC Fight Night 121

It wasn’t the prettiest win of his distinguished career, but former heavyweight king Fabricio Werdum ended UFC Fight Night 121 in Sydney, Australia, with his hand raised for the second time in just 42 days, hammering out a tidy unanimous decision over Polish up-and-comer Marcin Tybura in hopes of earning a second crack at the man who took his title, Stipe Miocic.

Fabricio Werdum vs Marcin Tybura staredown video from UFC Sydney media day

The show must go on, despite all the distractions from today’s boomerang fiasco, in which former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum was charged for (cough) “assault” against welterweight big mouth Colby Covington, who like “Vai Cavalo,” was on the scene for all the pre-fight festivities leading up to UFC Fight Night 121 mixed martial arts (MMA) event on Saturday night (Nov. 18, 2017) in Sydney, Australia.

That means the cast and crew of UFC Sydney were on hand for a special gathering with the combat sports media. Not surprisingly, most of the questions surrounded Werdum and his flying weapon, but that’s not why you’re here. You’re here to see how the Brazilian stacks up against Marcin Tybura ahead of their FOX Sports 1 main event and well, I have good news for you. That staredown is embedded above, along with the rest of the UFC Fight Night 121 main card face offs.

MMAmania.com will deliver LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the entire UFC Fight Night 121 fight card on fight night (click here), starting with the UFC Fight Pass “Prelims” matches online at 6:30 p.m. ET, followed by the FOX Sports 1 “Prelims” bouts at 8 p.m. ET, before the main card start time at 10 p.m. ET, also on FOX Sports 1.

Fabricio Werdum/Colby Covington Argument Ends With Thrown Boomerang

The conventional belief is that when you throw a boomerang, it’s supposed to return to you. But few realize that throwing a boomerang so it comes back takes a modicum of technique. I know this because I’ve thrown a boomerang and had it simply land like a bent stick in the grass, and I had […]

Colby Covington pressing charges against Fabricio Werdum: ‘He will probably end up in prison’

Hey, remember when UFC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg got sick of Angela Magana’s trash talk and slugged “Your Majesty” at the UFC summit earlier this year in Las Vegas?

If not, refresh your memory here.

That’s kind of where we’re at with the whole Fabricio Werdum vs. Colby Covington fiasco in Sydney, Australia, with the addition of an airborne boomerang (video). One that could land “Vai Cavalo” into trouble with law enforcement now that “Chaos” intends to press charges.

Seriously.

“He fucked up,” Covington told MMA Fighting. “There’s video and I speak the truth. He will be exposed soon, probably end up in Australia prison. He wrote a check his ass can’t cash. He’s on video so all his lies will be told soon.”

Magana went to the cops, as well.

Hopefully Covington waits until Sunday to play rat. Werdum is expected to headline Saturday night’s (Nov. 18, 2017) UFC Fight Night 121 event on FOX Sports 1 (results) and losing the Brazilian would strand Marcin Tybura without an opponent.

Again.

Midnight Mania! Fabricio Werdum hits Colby Covington with boomerang in Australia

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Yes, you read that headline correctly. Fabricio Werdum and Colby Covington got into it before this weekend’s UFC event in Australia, in which Werdum is one half of the main event. Werdum threw a wrapped boomerang at Colby. Another look:

Covington also filmed himself hurling insults at Werdum, including a homophobic slur. That part is a little ironic, considering Werdum was in hot water recently for throwing gay slurs during an altercation with another lighter weight fighter, interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson. Colby Covington, meanwhile, has been making a name for himself as an antagonist, insulting everyone and everybody with zero restraint- especially Brazilians, referring to Brazil as a dump.

Covington soon deleted the post, but the internet is forever, bro.

Werdum was insistent that, despite Covington’s allegations in the video, he didn’t throw a punch. Via FloCombat.com:

“This guy is really audacious,” Werdum told FloCombat. “I went down with my master [Rafael Cordeiro]: ‘Master, let’s get a hair cut and shave the beard.’ We were in the lobby, and I’ve never seen this guy before. When I walked he looked at me and said: ‘Brazilian animals.’ And I was like: ‘Hey.’ I slapped his phone and asked, ‘What did you say?’ Then, he kicked my leg, but I managed to defend. Then the guys got in the middle and had nothing left. But he kicked me, he is audacious. I could have hurt myself.

“I don’t know why he insists on this mistake of speaking of the Brazilians… I didn’t understand. [...] He wants media, wants to imitate Conor McGregor. He looks like ridiculous the way he does. I didn’t believe when he said it. I didn’t believe it. I slapped his phone and he stepped back and kicked me. Then we were arguing, and he kept shouting that Brazilians were animals.

“If I had hit him in the face, he would be in the hospital. Certainly. There was no punch, he’s crazy.”

Apparently the boomerang was a gift to Werdum from a fan.

The UFC has released a statement on the matter:

“UFC was made aware of the altercation between Fabricio Werdum and Colby Covington at the organization’s host hotel in Sydney, Australia. The organization will conduct a full investigation to determine if the Athlete Conduct Policy was violated before taking any further action on this matter.”

Of all the things UFC fighters have hurled at each other, including water bottles, Monster cans, and shoes, this boomerang has to be by far the best, given a throwing weapon was it’s original purpose.

The significance of geopolitical sports diplomacy aside, Benjamin Netanyahu compared a description of MMA to the Knesset, Israel’s legislative body, which I found to be hilarious. These fighters visited Netanyahu ahead of Bellator 188 in Tel Aviv, headlined by UFC veteran Noah Lahat.
