Nate Diaz and Dustin Poirier Pushing Hard for a 165-Pound Title Fight

The UFC is coming to Madison Square Garden for UFC 230, and as they’re wont to do, they’re trying hard to cobble together an epic main event. But they’re having trouble doing that, so co-main eventers Nate Diaz and Dustin Poirier have an idea: Make their fight into a title fight. The weight class? A heretofore unheard of 165-pound division.

The idea is insane. And also perfect.

Here’s Diaz and Poirier going back and forth on Twitter over the issue:

Now, there’s is no 165-pound division. The cutoff for welterweights is 170 pounds, the cutoff for lightweights is 155, and in between are just dudes living their small lives as borderline dwarves and hobbits. Diaz and Poirier are playing us, and playing the UFC by very publicly trying to force their hand.

But…

Why not let Diaz and Poirier fight for a made-up title? I mean, what’s the difference between that and the UFC having them fight for an interim belt in an established division?

There is no difference. The prize for the victor at the end is still some arbitrary thing that has no real value when it comes to the UFC’s stars and those stuck in their orbit. And Diaz is certainly a star, while Poirier is on the cusp of breaking out, too.

I saw let them have their fake belt. If it makes them happy, and adds luster to their match, why not?

What do you think?
