UFC 211 results: Biggest winners, loser from ‘Miocic vs dos Santos 2’ last night in Dallas

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to action last night (Sat., May 13, 2017) for UFC 211: “Miocic vs. dos Santos 2” which took place inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, airing live on pay-per-view (PPV). The promotion’s latest mixed martial arts (MMA) card was headlined by a Heavyweight title fight that saw Stipe Miocic knockout Junior dos Santos in the very first round (see it). Also, Joanna Jedrzejczyk defended her belt for the fifth straight time by outlasting Jessica Andrade in a hard-fought five round fight (highlights).

Biggest winner: Stipe Miocic

Revenge is a dish best served … via knockout. And Stipe did just that after knocking out Junior dos Santos in the very first round to retain his Heavyweight title, earning some get back from his loss to the Brazilian three years ago. Even better, Miocic scored his fifth straight knockout win, four in a row in the very first round. If there was ever a doubt he was truly the best heavyweight in the world, they disappeared, and fast. He still has a line of hungry heavy-hitters ready to take him out, including the likes of Cain Velasquez, Francis Ngannou and Derrick Lewis. Indeed, the heavyweight division is alive and well.

Runner (s) Up: Demian Maia and Frankie Edgar

Maia was criticized by current welterweight champion Tyron Woodley for accepting fight against Jorge Masvidal instead of waiting for his shot at the title. But, in the end, the jiu-jitsu ace made “The Chosen One” eat his words, as not only did Maia get a win over Jorge, he picked up an extra payday in between his championship fight, which Dana White awarded him immediately after defeating Masvidal. Not a bad night’s work.

Edgar, meanwhile, wasn’t about to let a young up-and-comer in Yair Rodriguez make a name off him, as he absolutely creamed the Mexican-born fighter en route to a doctor’s stoppage victory which was caused by “The Answer’s” ruthless ground-and-pound. With the win, Frankie likely set himself up for his third shot at winning the 145-pound strap, as he’ll have a close eye on the upcoming title unification match between Jose Aldo and Max Holloway at UFC 212 on June 3. Frankie showed once again why he was often considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the game, and one more win could see him wearing UFC gold once again.

Biggest Loser: Yair Rodriguez

Going into his fight against Frankie Edgar, Yair was looking to get the signature win he needed in order to take him to the next level. It didn’t come, as Frankie absolutely mauled “El Pantera,” leaving him a bloody mess — as promised — by ground-and-pounding the up-and-coming fighter relentlessly. In the process, Edgar shut Yair’s eye right up, making it hard for the Mexican-born fighter to see the oncoming onslaught. In the end, the ringside physician put an end to the bout due to Yair’s extremely-swollen eye. The loss is devastating for Yair’s rise, but, the 24-year old has time on his side to mount another winning streak. As Edgar stated, he will be a star in the sport, but the loss was an obvious huge speed bump.
