Midnight Mania! Woodley Willing to Fight Colby at UFC 230- on One Condition

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight M-M-Mania!

The otherwise stacked UFC 230 is still without an official main event- though rumors have been swirling about the possibility of a Jon Jones return. Tyron Woodley, who just defended his welterweight title against Darren Till, said he is open to putting it on the line again at UFC 230. His dance partner would be erstwhile interim champion, inveterate trash talker Colby Covington. Via MMAJunkie.com:

“I’ve got an MRI on my thumb and I’m sending it for a second opinion,” Woodley said. “If I’m good, then I have no issue with fighting in November. The more I fight, the better rhythm I get in the swing of things. Obviously, I just fought, so I’m still in phenomenal shape. I’ve been eating pancakes, shrimp fried rice, brownies – taking a week and eating some bullcrap.

“… It all depends on how severe my thumb injury is. I dislocated it in the first round punching him in the back of the head. I thought it was just jammed.”

That’s not why punching someone in the back of the head is against the rules, but it would seem Woodley suffered unintentional consequences for breaking them.

“The Chosen One” was quick to brush off Covington as a credible threat, saying that his former teammate wouldn’t try to wrestle him. That seems like quite the assumption.

“Think about it: I was going to fight Nate Diaz with a torn labrum,” Woodley said. “He’s not going to try to wrestle me. The only thing he does better than me is dress horribly and wear terrible hats. Outside of that, that’s it. That’s his only advantage – and having extremely corny trash talk.”

He said even if his thumb isn’t one hundred percent, he’s still confident against Covington.

“I would love to fight in Madison Square Garden again,” he said. “Not to sound arrogant, but would never take a fight against Darren Till if not 100 percent confident in both my hands. So I think I could beat (Covington) even if my hand’s a little jacked up.”

Colby Covington Meets With President Trump, Gives Him Worthless Interim Belt

Moderately good fighter but dismal trash-talker Colby Covington won the UFC interim welterweight belt, and since he wants to take some time off to catch his breath, the UFC is rendering that belt null and void when real champ Tyron Woodley fights Darren Till. Which is whatever – if you hold stock in an interim belt these days, you’re a fool.

But Covington has managed to make the most of his worthless piece of gold-painted tin and simulated leather: He cashed it on for a photo op with President Donald Trump.

I guess this makes President Trump the interim welterweight champ now?

Colby Covington Wins Interim Belt, Only to Be Stripped of It

Hey, remember back when trash-talker Colby Covington won the interim welterweight belt by defeating Rafael dos Anjos back in UFC 225 in June? Well, homeboy is going to be stripped of his belt in September when actual champ Tyron Woodley faces challenger Darren Till. Because the UFC!

That’s right, folks. The value of that interim belt has now dropped so low it’s comparable to a Big Mac with a bite taken out of it, or maybe scratched DVD of old Home Improvement TV shows. Three months! Covington just won the damn thing last month, and because he wanted to take some time to heal some nagging injuries, he gets to deposit that interim belt in the nearest trash bin.

On the flipside, this is Covington we’re talking about, so… bwahahahahh!

Here’s ESPN:

Tyron Woodley will defend his welterweight title against Darren Till on Sept. 8, UFC president Dana White tells ESPN’s Brett Okomoto.

The highly anticipated 170-lb bout will headline UFC 228 in Dallas.

The UFC had been looking to secure a headline bout for the card for days now. One possibility invovled Woodley fighting interim welterweight champion Colby Covington. However, Covington was unable to fight on that date. Covington, who won the interim title on June 9, had successful surgery on Tuesday to correct a nasal issue, according to sources. Covington said he’d be ready to returnto the octagon for UFC 230 at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 3, but the UFC could not afford to wait that long to book the champion vs. champion fight because there were few options available to headline the pay-per-view in September. Covington, who won the interim title by defeating Rafael dos Anjos in June, will be stripped of that title the moment the fight between Woodley and Till starts, White said.
