Colby Covington Demands ‘Undisputed Champion’ Money From UFC

Former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington is on a quest to make sure fans know the UFC is run by a bunch of jerks. On Sunday evening, confirmation came out that Kamaru Usman would be next to fight champ Tyron Woodley, not Covington. That’s led the previously loyal Colby to rip into the UFC and Dana White, calling the UFC president a piece of s**t liar.

His words, not ours.

Has Colby showed any signs of cooling down? Absolutely not. But he did go from demanding the UFC release him to demanding he get paid properly for any non-title fight. That’s progress, I guess.

“They can get me to fight whoever but they’re going to have to give me undisputed championship pay,” Covington told MMA Weekly during another Monday interview. “I’m not going to go backwards. I was promised an undisputed title shot and undisputed pay, I’m not fighting for anything less than undisputed pay. I’m not going to fight for less money.”

“They want me to fight Darren Till? Fine, no big deal. I’ll fight him, but I’m getting my undisputed championship title fight pay to fight him.”

Covington claims he was put in the UFC matchmaking doghouse after a surgery to fix his sinusitis kept him from fighting Woodley at UFC 228 in September. White really hates sinusitis, it seems. You know what else he hates? Bad PPV numbers, and UFC 228 pulled just 130,000 buys. Also on the most hated list: guys who try to sit and wait for title shots. Add all that up and you get the much more active Kamaru Usman stealing Covington’s #1 contender spot.

Whether Covington plans to go out in a blaze of angry PR glory or stick around and prove UFC brass wrong is unclear. Colby has swung both ways in recent interviews. With MMA Weekly it sounded more like he’d stay with the UFC.

”You haven’t even seen me at my best,” he declared. “You’ve seen me fighting for an interim title and winning a title at 50-percent when I couldn’t even breathe. Swallowing mucus, swallowing blood, all in my lungs, all in my sinuses and I had to get that surgery to clear it out. So you haven’t even seen my potential.”

“I’m 30 years young. They act like they can put me on ice. I don’t give a s**t. Time is on my side, motherf**kers. I’ve got time to wait. The best is yet to come for Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington and I will not go out silently.”

Colby Covington Screwed Out of Title Fight Because He Is an Idiot

For a hot minute there, Colby Covington was almost the man. He beat Dong Hyun Kim, beat Demian Maia, and then beat former lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos (albeit at welterweight). Added to that formula was his incessant trash talk, and it seemed like Covington was a lock for a heated bout against reigning welterweight king Tyron Woodley.

Well, you know that old adage about striking while the iron is hot? Apparently Covington’s unwillingness to fight on the UFC’s timetable has cost him that would-be money fight.

I want to feel bad for Covington, maybe make the argument that he got screwed… but he’s an idiot who screwed himself. Sure, fighters are supposed to make the most of their time in the spotlight, because that time won’t last forever, but Covington’s wins were never all that exciting to begin with.

I guess he over-valued his worth. Because hated trash-talkers who are only minimally exciting are a dime a dozen, don’t you know?

Colby: No Commission Will Sanction Askren Slaughter

The Welterweight division has arguably been one of the most interesting divisions in 2018, as contenders have risen up one after another, going as far as causing a bit of a bottleneck when it comes to the title race. And 2019 seems to be even more promising for the 170-pound weight class, as Ben Askren has finally made his way to the Octagon and is expected to face off against Robbie Lawler at the upcoming UFC 235 pay-per-view (PPV) event on March 2, 2019, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Calling out pretty much the entire division — and some who aren’t in the weight class — “Funky” intends to pick off every contender one-by-one. Among the men in his cross-hairs is Colby Covington, the interim champion who still can’t seem to lock down a title fight against division champion Tyron Woodley.

“Chaos,” however, says a fight between he and Askren is going to be one that will prove difficult to get a green light on.

“Ben Askren, the only thing we have in common…I have a real belt, he has some belts from back in the day that don’t even matter anymore. But let’s be honest, no commission would approve this fight. He is not even ranked in the top 100,” said Colby on a recent edition of the Ariel Helwani MMA Show.

“It would be a slaughter and it wouldn’t be competitive. If that 36-year old virgin builds himself up and becomes a draw, then no problem. I will send him back to the back of the line just like everybody else,’ he concluded.

Despite Kamaru Usman showing off a signed contract that indicated he will get the next title shot against “The Chosen One,” Colby says it’s simply not going to happen as he fully intends to be the one to fight Woodley at UFC 235.

As for Askren vs Covington, that may not happen as soon as fight fans would like if “Chaos” has a say in the matter.
