The Weekly Grind: Diego Sanchez gets attacked by a chicken, Nate Diaz meets Dave Chapelle

The life of a professional fighter isn’t all glitz and glamour.

As if getting punched, kicked, kneed, choked and twisted into a pretzel on a regular basis isn’t enough, fighters attract a general wackiness that makes their lives, well…interesting.

To commemorate these day-to-day hardships, slip-ups, pranks, and more, we bring you, “The Weekly Grind.”

Fabricio Werdum shoots down Luke Rockhold callout: ‘Why would I fight a chicken?’

Heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum has responded to middleweight Luke Rockhold’s callout with some less than kind words.

Luke Rockhold has been largely absent from the UFC news grind for months now as he slowly recovers from knee surgery. But he sure made some headlines yesterday, eschewing more conventional middleweight targets to call out heavyweight Fabricio Werdum instead.

“I think me and Werdum got some old beef from Strikeforce,” he said on UFC Tonight. “He’s a guy I’ve always wanted to fight. I’ve thought it through and I like the style matchup. Given what’s going on in the middleweight division right now, screw that, I’m coming to heavyweight. Let’s do this.”

Fabricio was all set to face Ben Rothwell on the UFC 211 card in Dallas, Texas … until Rothwell failed a drug test and got provisionally suspended by USADA. That leaves him without a dance partner for the May 13th card. So what does he say about a possible Rockhold fight?

“I only fight people, I don’t fight chickens,” Werdum told MMAFighting.com. “He’s just promoting himself because he knows nobody is talking about him. I’m one step away from the belt. Why would I fight a chicken?”

You’d think Werdum would jump on the chance to fight a much smaller opponent, especially one associated with a camp that he doesn’t get along with at all. But it seems like Werdum doesn’t like much of anything being offered to him these days, a Luke Rockhold fight included.

Fabricio Werdum on Luke Rockhold’s callout: ‘Why would I fight a chicken?’

It looks like the rivalry between former UFC champions Fabricio Werdum and Luke Rockhold won’t be settled inside the Octagon.

Rockhold, an ex-middleweight champion, called out the 240-pound Brazilian following his comments on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, saying he’d move up to heavyweight to squash his beef with Werdum.

“Everyone’s steaming over this new fight I brought up,” Rockhold said Wednesday night on UFC Tonight. “I think me and Werdum got some old beef from Strikeforce. He’s a guy I’ve always wanted to fight. I’ve thought it through and I like the style matchup.

“Given what’s going on in the middleweight division right now, screw that, I’m coming to heavyweight. Let’s do this.”

Werdum, who bounced back into the win column with a win over Travis Browne after losing the UFC heavyweight championship to Stipe Miocic, recently had another fight canceled when Ben Rothwell got flagged for a potential USADA violation. He surely doesn’t like Rockhold, but is looking for bigger competition as he moves closer to another shot at the heavyweight championship.

“I only fight people, I don’t fight chickens,” Werdum told MMA Fighting after Rockhold’s comments. “He’s just promoting himself because he knows nobody is talking about him. I’m one step away from the belt. Why would I fight a chicken?”

Khabib Nurmagomedov blows a gasket on Twitter, calls out ‘chicken’ Eddie Alvarez and Nate Diaz for ducking him (again)

Khabib Nurmagomedov has long been as vocal outside the Octagon as he is dominant inside it. And last night (Aug., 16, 2016), “The Eagle” proved it once again by going off on Twitter on a bevy of subjects, particularly calling out newly-minted Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez for allegedly ducking him repeatedly after turning down fight offers from UFC matchmakers.

On top of that, Nurmagomedov also took the time to call out Nate Diaz — who will rematch Conor McGregor in the UFC 202′s main event this Saturday night — for ducking him, too. Remember that it was not too long ago that the trio of hot heads, which included Nick Diaz, clashed in a wild brawl (watch it) during a World Series of Fighting (WSOF) event. Nurmagomedov claimed at the time that Nate “ran away from him three times” before him and his older brother were ultimately banned from all future shows.

Anyway, behold Nurmagomedov’s latest social media-inspired unraveling:

Nurmagomedov is expected to get first crack at dethroning Alvarez from atop of the Lightweight mountain. However, if his claims of “The Underground King” turning down a proposed title defense against him are true, there’s no telling when he’ll get his championship opportunity.

Especially if Alvarez can make this wish a reality.

Rafael dos Anjos wants ‘chicken’ Conor McGregor at lightweight: ‘Easy money’

Interim featherweight champion Conor McGregor vowed to “take (Rafael) dos Anjos, without a problem” after beating Jose Aldo, and the UFC lightweight champion is interested in the fight.

dos Anjos, who defends the 155-pound title for the first time against Donald Cerrone, says McGregor would be “easy money”.

“I would love if he comes to lightweight, it would be easy money to beat that guy up,” dos Anjos told the media during UFC 190 fight week. “I’d be happy if he comes to lightweight, to welcome him to the division, even in Ireland. It’s hard to say how the fight would be, but it would be aggressive, heavy hands, and he wouldn’t handle it.”

Before thinking about dos Anjos, McGregor has to take care of Aldo in December. According to the Kings MMA lightweight, who watched McGregor defeat Chad Mendes in July, the Nova Uniao star would have defeated “The Notorious” if they fought at UFC 189.

“This guy has no chance. Aldo would destroy him,” he said. “If Chad Mendes was in shape, he would have destroyed him, he showed that. He walked right next to me and he’s too small, he looked like a chicken. Chad Mendes is strong, but McGregor has no chances. That fight really exposed who he really is. He’s that fighter.

“I’ve never seen Chad take a step back, he always moves forward, and he was breathing hard after the first minute,” he continued. “T.J. Dillashaw was sitting right next to me and I asked him how was Chad’s cardio when he got the call from the UFC, and he said ‘he’s well for three rounds, not five, but he’s always in shape’. But he gassed in one minute, and still beat McGregor up in the first and second rounds. But I believe McGregor is not even close to the top 5 of the division.”
