‘Bigfoot’ Silva camp open to Rico Verhoeven rematch in MMA after TKO loss at GLORY 46

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight title contender Antonio Silva didn’t fare too well in his first-ever professional kickboxing match, losing to current GLORY Kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven in the second round yesterday (Sat., Oct. 14, 2017) at GLORY 46 from inside the Guangzhou Gymnasium in Guangzhou, China.

Of course, it was an outcome many expected — “Bigfoot” included — as Rico is one of the best standup specialists in the game today.

Now that Silva took a leap to step into the kickboxing world, his camp wants Rico to do the same, as Silva’s manager Alex Davis tells MMA Fighting he’d love to see Rico grant Silva a rematch under mixed martial arts (MMA) rules.

“So Antonio went out there and did his first kickboxing fight against the current Glory champ and legend Rico Verhoeven. And not even himself expected to win, but he fought like a lion! Nothing to be ashamed of! And nor was it the manslaughter everyone predicted. So now, Antonio thinks that it is Verhoeven’s turn to fight in MMA, and since he took the first challenge, now respectfully invites Rico to do the same in MMA. Bigfoot would be more then happy to welcome him!”

Rico does have some MMA experience, winning his lone fight via knockout in the very first round back in 2015, so it won’t be anything new for the towering striker. That said, Silva has lost his last five in a row and eight of nine overall.

While the fight isn’t exactly out of the realm of possibility, they would still have to find an MMA organization that is willing to sanction the fight.

Anyone think “Bigfoot” would do better against Rico in his own sport?

‘Bigfoot’ Silva back on TRT for Vitaly Minakov fight in Russia

Antonio Silva is looking to snap a four-fight losing skid, and he’s cleared to go on testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) once again.

“Bigfoot”, one of the few UFC fighters allowed to go on TRT before the treatment was banned by the Nevada Athletic Commission, is set to meet former Bellator heavyweight champion Vitaly Minakov at Fight Nights Global, scheduled for June 2 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Silva lost a decision in a thrilling contest with Ivan Shtyrkov in his first fight outside the UFC in November, and confirmed to MMA Fighting that he’s back on TRT now. Ag Fight first reported the news.

“Thanks God I’m using it again,” Silva told MMA Fighting. “My life is better, way better, because my testosterone levels are back to normal. I feel with more energy in my day to day life.

“And as an athlete, my muscle fatigue decreased 90 percent between training. I can recover my body better now. It was hard for me before because I was completely tired after every training.”

“Bigfoot” says he and his team reached out to the Fight Nights Global promoters before starting the treatment, and they allowed it since his doctors proved that he needed it.

“It’s unfair for a fighter with testosterone levels at 1000 to fight a fighter with normal levels, at 400, but it’s also unfair for a fighter with normal levels to fight someone at 100,” Silva’s manager Alex Davis said. “‘Bigfoot’ has health issues and needs it. If he doesn’t do TRT, his levels drop to 120. In Russia, he will be able to do it and bring his levels back to normal and become a different ‘Bigfoot’. If he had the opportunity to do it in the UFC, bring his levels back to normal, his last fights would have been completely different.”

The only time Silva used TRT before, he explains, was against Mark Hunt. Silva ended up testing positive for elevated levels of testosterone after fighting to a draw with “The Super Samoan”.

Winner of only one of his last nine fights, Silva is confident that his experience against some of the best heavyweights in the world will be the key against Minakov, who puts his perfect 19-0 record on the line in his native Russia.

“He’s really tough, but there are flaws in his game and we will work on that,” the Brazilian said. “I’ve already faced the best heavyweights in the world, and thanks to that I’ll use my experience in this fight.

“I’ll go for the knockout because I know that, in Russia, the decision will always go for them.”

Vitaly Minakov vs. ‘Bigfoot’ Silva set for Fight Nights Global in Russia

A heavyweight clash between Vitaly Minakov and Antonio Silva is set for Fight Nights Global in St. Petersburg, Russia, on June 2. The promotion announced the fight on Tuesday.

Minakov (19-0) recently scored his fifth straight stoppage victory since leaving Bellator in 2014, stopping DJ Linderman in the third round. The former Bellator heavyweight champion survived an early scare to add the 10th knockout win to his resume.

Silva (19-11, 1 NC) competed for the last time in November, his first bout since leaving the UFC, and lost a close decision to Ivan Shtyrkov after a back and forth battle in Russia. “Bigfoot” desperately needs a victory after winning only three of his last 13 fights.

‘Bigfoot’ Silva falls in violent, back-and-forth decision in Russia

People have questioned Antonio Silva’s chin. No one, though, has ever said anything negative about his heart. Both things proved more than up to the task Friday.

“Bigfoot” made his return to MMA after being cut by the UFC last month on a card in Russia and fought valiantly in defeat. Ivan Shtyrkov took the victory by three-round decision at RCC Boxing Promotions in Yekaterinburg.

The fight could have easily been stopped in the second round when Shtyrkov repeatedly teed off with punches to Silva’s face on the ground and in the turtle position. But the referee allowed it to go on and “Bigfoot” somehow survived the onslaught.

Silva, 37, might have even come back to win the third round against his exhausted Russian opponent. The first round was a tossup, with Silva landing some damaging blows, but Shtyrkov putting forth more volume and cumulative damage.

“Bigfoot” (19-11, 1 NC) was released by the UFC in October after falling by second-round knockout to Roy Nelson at UFC Fight Night: Cyborg vs. Lansberg in September. Silva, a popular heavyweight and former EliteXC champion, has just one win in his last nine fights and has been knocked out six times in that stretch.

Shtyrkov (5-0) has finished all of his pro fights, including a 31-second submission victory over Jeff Monson in May.

UFC releases ‘Bigfoot’ Silva

There won’t be any “Bigfoot” sightings in the UFC again any time soon.

The promotion released Antonio Silva recently after a rough stretch for the former elite heavyweight, MMA Fighting confirmed with UFC officials Friday. Globo was the first to report the news. Silva had lost three straight, all by knockout

Globo reported that Silva, 37, is already fielding offers from other promotions. “Bigfoot” owns a win over Fedor Emelianenko under the Strikeforce banner in 2011 and the promotion that signs Emelianenko could very well want to put together that rematch.

Silva (19-10, 1 NC), a former EliteXC and Cage Rage heavyweight champion, has just one win in his last eight fights and all of his losses have come via knockout. In his last outing, the Brazilian lost by second-round KO to Roy Nelson in September.

Before this current skid, “Bigfoot” was regarded as one of the best heavyweights in the world. Silva, who had been in the UFC since 2012, owns victories over the likes of Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem, Travis Browne and Andrei Arlovski on his record. His fight with Mark Hunt in 2013 was one of the best heavyweights bouts in UFC history, but was somewhat marred when Silva, a past user of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), was suspended due to elevated testosterone levels.
