Liam McGeary vs Chris Fields to headline Bellator 173 in Belfast

Bellator 173: “McGeary vs. Fields” takes place Feb. 24, 2017, at SSE Arena in Belfast, northern Ireland. It’s a quick return to Europe for the mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion following the “King Mo vs. Ishii” card in Dublin back in Dec. 2016. One familiar face from that card is also making a quick return — “The Strabanimal” James Gallagher — facing an opponent to be determined. The undefeated (5-0) Featherweight will need some quality competition for the show to test his mettle.

In the main event of the evening, though, a fighter who has already been well tested, Liam McGeary (11-1) — who until he faced “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis last November held an unblemished record — will be featured. The former Light Heavyweight champion has been booked to face Dublin’s Chris Fields (11-7-1). Although Fields’ record is middling, he does come into the fight having submitted Dan Konecke in the first round at BAMMA 24, and his experience makes him a dangerous opponent for anyone.

Future bouts will be announced at a later date. Meanwhile, check out Bellator 173′s current line up:

Bellator 173 “McGeary vs. Fields” Main Card (Spike TV):

Light Heavyweight: Liam McGeary (11-1) vs. Chris Fields (11-7-1)
Featherweight: James Gallagher (5-0) vs. TBD

Liam McGeary to face Chris Fields at Bellator 173 in Belfast

Liam McGeary will head to the United Kingdom in an attempt to bounce back from dropping the Bellator light heavyweight title.

The former champ will take on Ultimate Fighter alum Chris Fields in the main event of Bellator 173 on Feb. 24 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, ESPN reported Monday night via Bellator president Scott Coker.

McGeary (11-1), a native of England, was undefeated going into a title defense against Phil Davis in November, but dropped a unanimous decision. The New York resident had won eight straight for Bellator, including a title victory over Emanuel Newton in February 2015. McGeary, 34, trains out of Renzo Gracie Academy.

Fields (11-7-1) is coming off a first-round submission win over Dan Konecke back in February under the BAMMA banner. The Dublin native, who trains with Conor McGregor at SBG Ireland, competed on TUF 19. Fields, 33, had two bouts cancelled in the latter half of 2016 for BAMMA, which is a partner of Bellator in the UK and Ireland.

Also on the card, per ESPN, will be James Gallagher, another SBG Ireland product under John Kavanagh. No opponent has been named yet for the 20-year-old prospect, who has won his first two Bellator bouts.

Watch Stevie Ray earn split-decision win over Ross Pearson at UFC Fight Night 99 in Belfast

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veteran Ross Pearson moved back down to lightweight to challenge talented Scottish finisher Stevie Ray earlier today (Sat., Nov. 19, 2016) at UFC Fight Night 99 exclusively on Fight Pass from inside the SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Pearson was aiming to end a two-fight losing streak while Ray was looking to notch his fourth win in five Octagon appearances.

After a back-and-forth first round that culminated with an emphatic takedown slam by Ray, the Scottish prospect began to tag Pearson with oblique kicks, body shots and head attacks. Ray channeled spacing footwork and versatile offensive weapons to pick apart the Brit for the majority of three rounds en route to earning the split-decision win.

The full video highlights can be seen above courtesy of UFC during Ray’s post-fight backstage interview.

With this win, Ray moves closer to the lightweight top 15. While Pearson has lost three in a row, he’s still a good measuring stick for rising prospects. Ray passed the test with flying colors and looks primed to breakout in 2017.

Illness forces Ian McCall out of fight with Neil Seery this weekend at UFC Fight Night: Belfast

Ian McCall might have the worst luck in MMA.

As reported by MMAJunkie, Ian McCall has been removed from his fight with Neil Seery at this weekend’s UFC Fight Night: Belfast card due to illness. This marks the third time in four months that McCall has had a fight scrapped on fight week.

In July, McCall’s scheduled fight with Justin Scoggins at UFC 201 was cancelled when Scoggins missed weight. McCall was then set to face Ray Borg at UFC 203 but the bout was cancelled when Borg came down with an illness a few days before the event.

McCall was set to face Seery in the main event of the Fight Pass prelims. The fight was also supposed to be the retirement bout for Seery. Seery reportedly made weight at 126 lbs. and will be receiving his show money.

Elsewhere on the card, Zak Cummings missed weight for his welterweight bout with Alexander Yakovlev, coming in at 172.8 pounds. That extra 1.8 pounds will cost Cummings 20% of his purse which will go to Yakovlev.

UFC Fight Night: Belfast takes place Saturday at SSE Arena Belfast in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

What striking? UFC ‘Breakdown’ goes ‘On the Mat’ for ‘Mousasi vs Hall 2’ in Belfast

I think it’s safe to say most mixed martial arts (MMA) fans are expecting the Gegard Mousasi vs. Uriah Hall rematch, which takes place this Saturday (Nov. 19, 2016) inside SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to play out on the feet.

It did last time, and ended poorly for “The Dreamcatcher.”

But even though both Mousasi and Hall are talented strikers, this is still an MMA fight, which means wrestling and jiu-jitsu are always in play. It’s not uncommon for a fighter to get rocked and resort to panic wrestling.

To disastrous results.

But if and when the UFC Belfast headliner, scheduled for five rounds on UFC Fight Pass, hits the ground for some grappling, UFC analyst and former welterweight contender Dan Hardy shows you what to expect in this latest edition of UFC Breakdown: “On the Mat.”
