Paige VanZant planning 2017 return, vows to fight ‘anyone who is available’

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) flyweight attraction, Paige VanZant, has been forced to remove herself from the upcoming UFC 216 pay-per-view (PPV) event, booked for Sat., Oct. 7, 2017 inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

More on that change here.

The good news for “12 Gauge” fans is that VanZant is expected to make her Octagon return before the end of the year, though no word yet if Jessica Eye — left in limbo ahead of UFC 216 — will be willing to wait around for the eventual do-over.

“Depending on my healing timeline, I’ll fight anyone who is available,” VanZant told MMA Fighting.

The former Dancing with the Stars finalist managed to avoid surgery after re-aggravating a pre-existing back injury when training for Eye, which prompted a mandatory timeout from her physician.

Metamoris VI closed off to public, only available to watch on pay-per-view stream

Anyone in Southern California hoping to check out Chael Sonnen and Josh Barnett at Metamoris this weekend will need a web browser.

Metamoris VI will be closed off to the public Saturday, founder Ralek Gracie confirmed with MMAFighting.com this week. No fans or media will be allowed in the building, which will be more of a studio set up. It’s even unclear exactly where the grappling exhibition will be broadcasting from.

The only way to watch Metamoris VI will be via a pay-per-view stream on its website. The previous five events have all been open to spectators.

“We are experimenting with a more intimate setting for our athletes in their participation and focusing our resources on the pay-per-view experience for fans worldwide,” Gracie told MMAFighting.com in a statement.

Metamoris is not allowing any outside filming in the venue, either — even if it’s affiliated with one of the competitors. Joe Lauzon, who meets Dillon Danis on Saturday, tweeted Tuesday that he will not be able to put out his popular fight week video blogs.

The Metamoris Twitter account responded back and Lauzon expressed his displeasure.

Not letting in fans (media has been barred from past events) is the latest in odd public-relations decisions for Metamoris. Gracie has come under fire recently for making athletes sign exclusive contracts and his stance on women’s grappling. There has only been one female match in Metamoris history and Gracie insinuated that women’s bouts would not be a big enough draw.

“We have to be constantly pushing the edge of what our viewership is, otherwise we won’t survive,” Gracie told MMAFighting.com’s Luke Thomas last month. “All we’re doing is reinvesting all of our money into these athletes. We’re spinning a wheel. We have to keep the wheel moving. I just don’t think there’s women who are really going to bring it on that level.”

After an outcry from the grappling community, Gracie posted a video on Metamoris’ YouTube page after those controversial comments, essentially doubling down on what he initially said. In the video, Gracie said he was proud of himself for inadvertently starting the women’s grappling discussion and encouraged Metamoris fans to make suggestions on which women they would like to see compete.

Along with Lauzon-Danis, the card will feature Barnett taking on Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu and Sonnen meeting Renato “Babalu” Sobral. In the other matches, Keenan Cornelius meets Xande Ribeiro, Clark Gracie faces Roberto Satoshi and Jeff Monson takes on the winner of the Road to Metamoris tournament.

With no readily available opponent to replace injured Gamburyan, Chad Mendes out of UFC 157

Chad Mendes‘ bad luck continues.

The world-ranked featherweight contender can’t seem to get a fight against anyone of his caliber, again losing out on a quality opponent when his scheduled UFC 157 fight with Manny Gamburyan fell apart.

Gamburyan suffered a broken thumb and fractured elbow, forcing him to withdraw from the fight, and rather than offer Mendes a second-rate opponent at the Feb. 23 show, the UFC has elected to pull him off the card completely.

Mendes confirmed his removal on Twitter.

Before confirming he was out, Mendes (13-1) had attempted to lure surging contender Ricardo Lamas into a bout, but Lamas indicated he had already verbally accepted another fight that will take place in May.

Mendes had the same problem recently. In December, he had been scheduled to fight Hacran Dias, but just days before the event, Dias, the owner of a nine-fight win streak, injured his shoulder and was forced out.

Instead, the 27-year-old Mendes faced the newly signed Yaotzin Meza on short-notice, and he won in just 1:55 with a knockout.

It was his second-straight dominant victory. A few months earlier, he crushed Cody McKenzie, knocking him out in just 31 seconds.

Overall, Mendes is 2-0 since losing in his attempt to wrest the title from Jose Aldo, but it’s been slow going in earning quality wins and getting back to a position where he can once again offer himself up as a viable challenger.

Meanwhile, with the scratch of Mendes-Gamburyan, the UFC 157 card will go off in Anaheim, California with 11 bouts.

Happy Fourth of July from Bellator!

That’s right, the world’s number two mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion has finally released its online video game titled “Onslaught,” developed by Kung Fu Factory and published by 345 Games, available TODAY (July 4, 2012) on both the Playstation Network and Xbox Live.

And it’s cheap!

For around $ 15, you can download “Onslaught” and play through the Bellator Fighting Championships single elimination tournament in what’s being described as a “fast-paced arcade style MMA fighting game” with “easy to understand controls that enable players to quickly master the clinch and ground game.”

“Onslaught” also allows players to design their own fighter and compete both online or locally against other opponents (or the Bellator AI). As with most online games, there will be leaderboards and achievements to earn in order to keep the replay value high.

See a sample here.

After the jump, take a look at some of the videos of in-game action from Bellator MMA “Onslaught” (or just stare at ring girls Jade and Bryce) and let us know if you’ll be picking this one up in the comments section below.

For $ 15, how can you go wrong?
