Forget July, Smith Wants Jones ASAP!

After recaliming his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight title by demolishing Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232 (replay) on Saturday (Dec. 29, 2018), Jon Jones took the chance to call out Daniel Cormier, daring him to come get his belt back.

But another man is also waiting in line for a 205-pound title fight, as Anthony Smith was in the Fox Sports studios breaking down the event, while hoping for his chance to challenge “Bones.” While he did get the opportunity to do it after the champ hopped on air for an interview, “Lionheart” picked a July date for the matchup, which is seven months from now.

That callout didn’t sit too well with his co-host Michael Bisping, who urged Smith to up his trash talk and call for a title fight right away. Jones also clowned on Smith for wanting to wait until “Intentional Fight Week,” which may have cost him his shot at the strap.

Upon catching wind of Jon’s response, Smith took to social media to declare that he is actually ready to throw down anytime, anywhere.

“Lionheart” earned his way to the top spot after racking up quite a win streak, taking out the likes of Mauricio Rua and Rashad Evans in just 2.5 minutes of combined fight time. He followed up those dominant performances by chocking out Volkan Oezdemir in the third round last October.

Sitting comfortable at the No. 3 spot behind Gustafsson, there’s really no one else standing in Smith’s way for a shot at Jones. Unless, of course, “DC” decides to follow up on his acceptance of a trilogy fight against his bitter rival.

Bellator 210 Results: Joe Warren Is Falling Apart and Needs to Retire ASAP

Hey, guess what? There’s a Bellator going on tonight, with Bellator 210 bringing us the likes of Chidi Njokuani, David Rickels, Joe Schilling and Goiti Yamauchi. Essentially, it’s a “whatever” card. But the prelims just went down, and on it, we got to see former featherweight- and bantamweight champ Joe Warren get creamed by Shawn Bunch.

Both men are wrestlers, so of course this one was a face-punching contest. Unfortunately, Warren got hit in what looked like the collarbone, and was semi-defenseless after that, so Bunch just punched the living daylights out of him.

Warren didn’t go down, he just cowered, and eventually the ref mercifully jumped in.

Dana White: Cris Cyborg vs Amanda Nunes is the fight to make, will get booked ASAP

Cristiane Justino vs. Megan Anderson at UFC 221?

FAKE NEWS!

Instead, “Cyborg” — fresh off her UFC 219 title defense against Holly Holm — will square off against another bantamweight import in the form of reigning 135-pound queenpin Amanda Nunes, who called for a fight against the winner of this bout just last week.

Promotion president Dana White is on board.

“Amanda Nunes wants to fight Cyborg,” White told Yahoo! Sports. “That is the fight to make and that is the fight I will make. Amanda Nunes is a big, strong, powerful puncher and I think she matches up very well with Cyborg. I think that’s a fun fight. That’s the fight to make.”

Not that he has much choice.

While Anderson remains sidelined for personal reasons, the promotion has struggled to find true featherweights to challenge Justino for her division strap. That’s why the official UFC rankings (see them here) are without a 145-pound weight class.

Justino vs. Nunes will be scheduled just as soon as “Lioness” can commit to a date.

Stay tuned.

Chad Mendes wants to fight Ricardo Lamas ‘ASAP’

With this Saturday’s fight between Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar having conditional title implications in the featherweight division, the rest of the weight class is left battling for position.

Former No. 1 contender Chad Mendes, who lost his rematch with featherweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 179 in October, has zeroed in on the guy he’s like to see next — and that’s the other former No. 1 contender, Ricardo Lamas. According to UFC Tonight’s Ariel Helwani, who spoke to Mendes’ manager Mike Roberts, the Team Alpha Male fighter wants Lamas ‘ASAP.’

But there’s a potential hitch. As also reported on UFC Tonight, Lamas is playing a little wait-and-see with the fight between Irish firebrand Conor McGregor and Dennis Siver, which is slated to take place on Jan. 18 in Boston. Lamas told Helwani that he is going to stay in shape to jump in should Siver get injured, because a fight with McGregor is what he covets the most. Lamas — a former All-American Division III wrestler at Elmhurst — said he thinks that McGregor should have to “face a wrestler” before fighting for the belt.

Lamas lost his title bit to Aldo at UFC 169 in February, but has since won back-to-back fights. His latest — against Dennis Bermudez at UFC 180 in Mexico City on Saturday night  — was an eye-opener. Lamas sank a first-round guillotine to snap Bermudez’s seven-fight win streak.
