Combate Estrellas I Results From Los Angeles

Rudy Morales (L) covers up against Jose “Froggy” Estrada (R) at Combate Estrellas on April 13 in Los Angeles.

Combate Americas, the world’s premier hispanic mixed martial arts (MMA) sports series, was hoping to make a huge splash in its live debut on Univision, following last month’s multi-year programming deal.

I think “The City of Angels” is underwater.

Combate Estrellas I blew the roof off The Shrine in Los Angeles, Calif., last Friday night (April 13, 2018) with an action-packed fight card that featured a bevy of highlight-reel finishes. That includes Jose Estrada’s violent technical knockout win over grizzled veteran Rudy Morales, the second straight stoppage for “Froggy” since dropping to featherweight.

Elsewhere on the televised main card, bantamweight headliner John Castaneda looked to get back to his winning ways after coming up short in the Copa Combate tournament last November, but it appears Jose Alday didn’t get the memo.

“Pochito” captured a split decision win after three hard-fought rounds.

In addition, boxing import Amanda Serrano made her highly-anticipated debut in “La Jaula” against Bellator veteran Corina Herrera in one of the best female fights in the history of the weight class. No doubt their three-round draw leaves the door open for a potential rematch.

Complete Combate Estrellas I results below:

Main Card:

135 lbs: Jose “Pochito” Alday def. John “Sexi Mexi” Castaneda by split decision (30-27, 29-28, 28-29)

125 lbs: Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano and Corina Herrera fight to a draw (28-28 x3)

145 lbs: Jose “Froggy” Estrada def. “Ruthless” Rudy Morales by technical knockout at 1:43 of R2

Undercard

155 lbs: Rafa “Gifted” Garcia def. Chase “El Guero” Gibson by majority decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-28)

155 lbs: Erick “Ghost Pepper” Gonzalez def. Danny “The Realist” Ramirez by technical knockout at 3:15 of R1

155 lbs: Gabriel Green def. Javier “El Mariachi” Garcia by submission (rear-naked choke) at 1:03 of R3

125 lbs: “Malicious” Mikey Reyes def. Heinrich “Ricky Scraps” Wassmer by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

144 lbs: Joey “El Cazador” Ruquet def. Keith “Danger” Carson by submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:18 of R1

Combate Estrellas II takes place next Friday night (April 20) on Univision from inside Gimnasio Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico, featuring the debut of former UFC bantamweight Erik “El Goyito” Perez (details here).

Ralek Gracie versus Hisaki Kato set for Bellator 170 in Los Angeles

Bellator’s big show to kick off 2017 just got a new fight.

Longtime jiu-jitsu instructor and Metamoris founder Ralek Gracie will make his Bellator debut on Jan. 21 against Hisaki Kato at The Forum in Inglewood, California. The news was first reported by Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times, and was made official in a Bellator press release.

The fight will take place at middleweight.

For the 31-year old Gracie (3-0), it will be his return to a mixed martial arts cage for the first time in six years, and his first ever professional fight in the United States. The last time Gracie competed in MMA was against Kazuki Sakuraba at DREAM 14 in March 2010. He won the bout via unanimous decision.

His two previous bouts — against Katsuyori Shibata and Alavutdin Gadzhiyev — were both submission victories (armbar).

The 34-year old Kato (7-2) has won back-to-back fights in 2016, scoring TKO victories over Yuta Watanabe and most recently A.J. Matthews. He is most well known for his superman punch knockout of Joe Shilling at Bellator 139 in 2015.

Bellator 170 will feature a headlining bout between Bellator newcomer Chael Sonnen and Tito Ortiz.

Jon Jones arbitration hearing against USADA set for Oct. 31 in Los Angeles

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is currently out of work after the embattled pound-for-pound great was temporarily suspended from mixed martial arts (MMA).

There’s a lot of that going around these days.

Jones was put on ice just days before the UFC 200 pay-per-view (PPV) event back in July, thanks to a positive drug test, and must now answer to United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) before he can return.

“Bones” opted for arbitration and his hearing has been set for Oct. 31, 2016 in Los Angeles, Calif., according to the folks at MMA Fighting, and he could face up to one year suspension.

Unless he follows this lead and cuts a deal.

Team Jones has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, insisting generic penis pills — not performance-enhancing drugs — were responsible for his latest setback, which also landed him in hot water with Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

So much for “soon.”

That means Daniel Cormier will hold on to sole possession of the 205-pound strap and will move on to fight Anthony Johnson for the second time when they collide at UFC 206 next month in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Sound familiar?
